Sorry for hijacking your thread OP, but since this was related to eSim, I might as well ask here.

How exactly would an eSim make switching carriers easy?
The service associated with a number is provided by 1 company say ATT. Now to switch over to another company say T-Mobile using my same number, won't I have to port out first?
Apart from saving space in the phone, I am yet to understand, how it is going to be simple to change service providers keeping the same number working.

Its still gonna be locked to a carrier, even with an e-sim. No reason to do that.
I mean, I don’t urgently need to use this phone to make phone calls, texts etc, if ESim is going to be launched soon then I will wait for it to be launched rather than having a physical SIM card in the phone

I suppose I can answer some of that questions.

The idea behind the esim is that you wouldn't need to visit a store or wait for sim package to be delivered at your doorstep. Essentially, you would just choose whatever carrier you want on your phone and activate it right away.

Now, current implementation of the system makes domestic use of esim rather awkward, (it's still easier than visiting the store, but still) but it makes much more sense during international trips and visits. During the off-shore stays, instead of using expensive roaming plans on your existing carrier, you can simply buy a prepaid plan from a local carrier and use theirs right at the airport.

Domestically, we would see the benefit of esim mostly in data plans; you can pick cheapest data plans from any carriers, while keeping the phone line with the existing carrier. Considering transferring phone numbers to different carriers takes about a day or so, (also the fact that most carriers now have unlimited phone+text plans) we should be able to see the benefits from that aspect as well.

THIS! I can understand being afraid of scratching the aluminum frame of iPhone 7 and prior... but the steel frame of the iPhone 8 and beyond is harder than the SIM ejector tool.

Unless you’ve got some serious shakes going on, popping a sim tray out shouldn’t do anything to the frame of any phone. They’re meant to be removed as needed.

In the Days of the iPhone 5, there was scuff gate. Any little thing would scratch the anodized aluminum... including the SIM ejector tool.

Yeah, I heard this, I’m going to wait until ESim has launched, I don’t want to activate my iPhone with a physical SIM card when I get it though, I want to just use my iPhone with wi Fi until they launch ESim, do you know how long until it’s launched and can I set up my new iPhone without using a SIM card with iOS 12, thanks for your help

There's no need to wait. Once Apple releases the update (in 3-40 months), I'm sure the carriers will have a process to migrate your number to the eSIM. So far, AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile support it in the US. Why not just wait to buy the phone if you really want to wait.

I know it sounds stupid but the reason I don’t want to put a sim in the phone is because I don’t want to scratch the stainless steel

Put a case on it? And if you say..well, I don't want to cover it up the pretty phone, then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It's a phone. It's meant to be used. The scratch you're worried about is gonna happen eventually. Might as well get it over with. lol. It's like Not wanting to drive a new car because you don't want to get dirt on it. Or not wanting to use a stainless steel pan because you don't want to scratch it while cooking. Just use it or don't buy it.

But do you. Your $.
