This is the second time I encounter this problem since I purchased the phone last Sunday.
I tried to wake the phone by tapping the screen and/or pressing the power button while charging, but it froze. When I press and hold Power+Vol(-) in attempt to shut down the device the screen suddenly began to flash (Apple Pay even popped up as I pressed the power button several times while it was freezing).

Did anyone encounter the same problem? I hope this is just a software bug that could be fixed but knowing the QA of Apple in recent years I'm also worried that this could potentially be a hardware issue.

As a side note I setup the phone as new, so restoring the phone with iTunes doesn't seem to be a solution.

(Apologies for my English as I'm not a native speaker...)

It was freezing for me after a restore from previous backup but since setting up as new it seems to be working fine so far. Although I just set it up last evening.

I had similar issues after restore so I reverted it back to factory and started it as a new iPhone setup and now my issues are gone

Unbox therapy already made a video on this issue, so you're not alone on this (obviously)

I managed to re-produce the issue after learning the charging problem. Plug in the charging cable with the phone locked, leaving the phone connected but not charging. Wait for a few minutes and the phone stopped responding (even WhatsApp Web shows that the phone is not connected).

To make it responsive again, I disconnected the phone from the charger, waited for 15-20 seconds and the screen started to show something.
