Hi all,

I know this is going to sound stupid but i'm sure most of you guys used them both. Yesterday was my birthday and my dad gifted me a xs max silver. I had never use anything but black/space grey for years. I watched a couple of comparison videos but they didn't help. Due to my country regulations, once i open the box, i can't replace it anymore:/ (and apple store is a bit of a drive) So should i just open and start using it or should i go and replace it with space grey. Maybe a little bit of a change is going to be good but i really don't know if i can stand silver corners..Gold is out of the question :)
Thank you!

Are you going to use a case? If so, this really becomes a non-issue. I have the gold and barely notice it even with the exposed edge seen with Apple cases. I'd just stick with what you've been gifted

For what it’s worth I’ve had space grey every year but this year will be going all silver for my next iphone, plus stainless steel watch and silver iPad Pro if they release one this year.

It barely matters anymore as all models have black fronts but personally I think the silver is the best looking of the three colours due to the uncoated stainless steel band.

I cannot make up your mind. Both models are clearly displayed on the website, the back of the devices is where the colour change is happening mostly.
I don’t look at the back of my device but on the screen most of the time as that’s your interface to the system. Just buy a case of your choice, put the device in there, done. ;)

If you have the chance to replace the sliver with a space grey and would be happier doing so, then I say do it.

I was a space grey guy myself. I bought the silver XS Max because I really liked the look of the stainless steel band. I use a case while out, so you can’t even tell what colour the back is. You just need to be happy with it.

If you intend to put. case over it, then I wouldn't bother with getting it exchanged with the space gray model. With the case, you would be covering majority of the back and the sides and you won't tell the difference in between as the front for both silver model and the space gray model have black bezel.

Keep in mind though is that, with Silver model, it's a bare stainless steel casing and no special coating used so down the road if it develop scratches, you can buff it out with the cape cod cloth or the like. While with the space gray and gold model, they both have PVD coating, and if that wears out or scratches, you cannot buff those out.

I prefer the space gray. The regular 316L scratches to easily (Which we know can be removed). Plus, the Space Gray bands include a PVD coating (Physical Vapor Deposition), which essentially provide some slight protection around the bands against scuff/scratches, but I find it be fairly durable.

I've had black for all my phones, until the iPhone X. The reason why is scratches/fingerprints. The glass back on the silver will still scratch, but you'll never see it (unless you looking for one). As far as the stainless frame, i polish once a month. Always looks brand new/clean.

I carry without a case. I switch colors with each new iPhone, and I like both space gray and silver; however, the PVD coating of the SG feels a bit (but not a lot) better in my hand. Fingerprint smudges are more noticeable on the stainless band, too. When it’s time for a new iPhone, I like to change colors.

Agreed, silver FTW.

The PVD coating has a gross/sticky feeling.

Maybe some people like the extra grip afforded by it, but to me it just feels tacky/cheap.

Phone is amazing! Color is fantastic. But, it's huge! Am i ever going to get use to it? :) A bit hard to carry. My hands are quite big but it makes my hand hurt when i'm talking to someone. Now i doubt maybe regular XS was better for me.

I was going to say the same. Almost any case is going to completely hide the bands, no matter what color. And there are no longer any bezels to give away the color. I'd keep it and say THANK YOU to your father.

I couldn't get use to the weight. It was heavy enough that my wrist would hurt while using it in bed for long periods of time.

Another perk of having the Silver Stainless Steel is that you get to polish it whenever you have scratches and make it look brand new.
