iPhone xs suddenly face id not working

hey all,
for some reason the face id on my iphone stopped working. last night it worked we, but today - nothing. when i tap unlock with face id, i get the face icon, but it doesn't shake.

iOS version 13,5,1

Have you tried setting up a new face?

yes, it keeps telling me to move the iPhone up/down/closer but nothing happens

Change your tempered glass. Worked for me.

Screen protector / screen guard. / Belkin etc.

thanks, I've tried that - when i tried to set an alternate face i got "face id is not available"

You tried without your current screen protector?

If you’ve done that, try Reset All Settings. Or Reset Face ID before that.

Yes. Also tried resetting Face ID, no use :/ I didn’t drop it since last night or anything and my warranty is expired🙁

Try reset all settings.

Try a phone restart before that.

If the above fails, you’ll need to get your display replaced. That’s almost USD 300

Happened to me the other day on my iPhone 11. Turned it off and then back on and it was fine (i.e. Have you tried turning it off and then on again 😉 ).

Same thing as well - before just rebooting first I went to try to setup an alternate face (my facial hair has been getting long?) and it just said FaceID is not available. Happened shortly after the update to iOS 13.5 so might be a software bug. Hasn't happened again since I rebooted it.

I saw something similar when the phone was overheating for being directly in the sun (in the dashboard of my car). It disappeared when it cooled down.
