This water resistance is BS. I dropped my beloved XS in my hot tub for maybe two seconds...it died. Was time to upgrade though as the battery wasn't lasting too long...
All water resistant phones lose their water resistance to some extent over time as the phone gets dropped, goes through thermal cycles, adhesives and gaskets lose their compression, etc.

I dropped my XR in the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 20 ft and it was in there for roughly 5-10 minutes before I realized it, found it and retrieved it.

It worked perfectly except for the speaker, which didn’t work for about a week until it fully dried out (I didn’t actively dry the phone, just normal usage). That phone is still working just fine for my mom, whom I handed it down to.

I think the more applicable comparison is from these older phones to the regular (non-pro) 14. Presumably someone waiting a long time to upgrade is more cost conscious and likely won’t go for the higher cost of the pro.

That’s not to say that they shouldn’t go for the 14 Pro (or 13 Pro). If you value the better cameras, I would rather have a 13 Pro than a 14 non-pro, if the rumors are accurate.
If they're coming from a XS they're already on the "Pro" line/price point. The XR would be the equivalent to the standard models.

It’s incredible that even though there is 3 CPUs between them, the A12 is still sturdy enough for day to day tasks vs an A15/14.
Not really, even the 6s can run iOS 15. Though I suppose it depends on what you consider day to day tasks.

I do find it interesting that the 13 isn't even 2x as powerful though.

iPhone XS weighs 0.39 pounds, while the iPhone 13 Pro weighs 0.45 pounds.
We mocked Apple for their thin-and-light mantra for a long time but this is a real problem for some people.

Still using the 6S. Will probably upgrade this year or next year.

Once an app I require no longer works on the 6S, if I haven’t upgraded already I will be forced to.

Can't wait to upgrade my XR. Ready for the high refresh display. Hopefully the notch gets replaced by the pill this year.

As an owner of an iPhone 7+ that still does everything for me it's always done, and still does it really well, what is a legitimate reason I should upgrade? Not being able to install iOS 16 does not bother me; iOS 15 is good enough.
The thing is, no one has any idea how long will Apple keep patching iOS 15 security flaws.
We got 1 iOS 14 patch after 15 and that's it. 😓

All iPhones that could run iOS 14 can run iOS 15 though which is very different to what’s happening with iOS 16.

Personally, I find most of these changes kinda meh…

I know the always on display is still only a rumour, but that plus the ProMotion is probably the most interesting to me. I think I’ll actually be quite torn this September (despite what I said in my earlier comment).

I would only consider buying the 14 if it has USB-C.

I have two devices that use USB-C, one lightning, and one USB-B. (In our family, we have 3 lightning devices). If I could change all of them to USB-C, I would do it in a heart beat.

This may just be anecdotal but my sister dropped her XR in her hot tub for just a few seconds and it didn't survive either. Maybe the heat of the water affects the seals differently, or maybe the X series just has some jank water resistance.
Interesting. I routinely wash my XS in hot soapy water 🤷🏽‍♂️

Not rounded edge, no sell. XS still going strong for me 🥳

Actually, it’s more about the hideous thickness of newer pros; I want the tele but that hump would and should never fit in my pocket.

Oh, and I use multi layered deep press all the time when typing (editing text is a breeze with deep press) - can’t imagine not having it 🤷🏽‍♂️

iPhone X still pretty good and gets latest iOS and security updates so little point in upgrading if I had one. But it may well be time to upgrade my 6S as it'll no longer get new iOS or security updates. How does the 6S compare to the 14 Pro (which is what I'll likely get)? Here's my thoughts...

iOS:
14 Pro - not limited to current iOS version. Yay! Also not sure how well current iOS will work on my 6S if I upgrade my Watch S5 to the latest WatchOS.

Connectability:
14 Pro - when I'm generally out and about it won't connect to any standard amp or audio system with a near-ubiquitous 3.5mm jack - boo.

Useability:
14 Pro - No force touch to easily press on the keyboard and instantly move my cursor around the text - very boo

Waterproofing:
14 Pro - some / any level of waterproofing so I can use it as a bike computer when it's drizzling without worrying. Super yay!

Camera:
14 Pro - far, far better - super yay! But camera is noticeably weaker and may be destroyed if it's on my quadlock mount on my gravel bike handlebars and gets hammered about off-road. Might need stupid bulky shock mounts or something else I may break it, repeatedly, but just doing what I currently do - very boo.

Performance:
The 6S is occasionally a little slow, but works fine. So I don't really care. If I want performance I'm doing something on my Mac. It's a phone, so snappier is nice but it's not like I'm gonna game on it when I have an iPad Pro or Mac. However, may save more battery life if the thing is barely ticking over running komoot and the like.

Battery:
Blatantly better. Might get away without a booster pack on some of my medium length rides if using it as a cycling computer.

Magsafe:
Do I or don't I really give a hoot? My house, workplace and car etc are full of lightning and USB-C, I'm not too lazy to stuff a lightning cable in. Although I have pondered I could get a rubbery bung to put in the lightning port, charge by magsafe everywhere and then I can sweat all over the thing using it as a bike computer and the lightning port won't corrode. This may come down to how well the battery lasts though cuz if I'm on an all-day ride with the screen on, I'll probably still need a battery booster pack which may undermine that plan. And if I'm in the wilderness I'm not gonna rinse all my battery packs with highly inefficient wireless charging and have to buy new wireless quadlock mounts for my adventure bike and my van (and other magsafe chargers for my office desk and all around my house where lighning cables are currently scattered).

5G:
Don't really care, 4G is usally fast enough for my phone in places I usually am. Meh.

WiFi 6E:
I generally get good spare channels in my house with the existing 5GHz band. When these are added I'm not gonna rush out to replace my router as my MAc doesn't have 6E. So not really fussed although it's kinda nice future proofing.

Ceramic Shield:
Hopefully it'll be harder to get a big crack across the screen like my 6S got a few months back. Yay!

Conclusions:
So overall, a superb upgrade, but I'm somewhat worried if I treat it like the 6S will I destroy the more fragile camera? Maybe the 6S continues to get used on cycling adventures, but then if I have to bugger about switching phones so then I'm not so sold on the point of a new one.

chlorine, heated water and steam. Phones are often not rated to take all 3 at once.
