I have what I assume would be classified as a Jailbroken iphone. I went to jailbreakme.com through my safari browser on my phone, went through the steps, and I now have Installer.app, and a lot of custom apps such as navizon, summerboard, etc all working well. The thing is though, when I view my iphone through iPhoneBrowser it shows the following Directory structure:

I thought once my phone was jailbroken it should show up as a /var directory that has more options. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I need it setup this way in order to app NES roms and also to add ringtones using the method put up under "Free Custom Ringtones on iPhone 1.1.1" on modmyifone.com.

Same thing happened to me. Here's what you do:

Since you should have Installer on there....install the BSD subsystem, and OpenSSH. Now download/install WinSCP on your PC. Connect your phone to the net via wifi. Go into the Network settings, and touch the small arrow at the far right of the network name you are connected to. Open up WinSCP and instruct it to connect to the ip address for the iPhone. User name is "root", password is "alpine". Once there, follow these instructions:

Once you do that, reboot the phone, and you'll have root level access through programs like iPhoneBrowser.

The jailbreakme.com method doesn't modify the Services.plist file to utilize the afc2 service, which is necessary to view the full file system. This process above will rectify that.
