iPhoneless Vicitim of "The Dead Strip"

I got an 8gb gen1 iphone. The bottom row of the touch screen is no longer working. Internet searches call this "the dead strip." Surprisingly I was within my Apple warranty. I have to mail this phone back and then they will send me a new one. I will be iPhoneless for like two weeks. I had to resort to "Where did I put my ipod?" It still works! It's like I have traveled back in time to 2003 and am listening to my 60gb video ipod. Using the click wheel is a trip!

Why not just walk into an Apple store (if you are close to one) and replace it right there?

I would think a gen 1. I wouldn't think I would get a free upgrade. Being without an iPhone just plain sucks. I needed a contact and was frantic for a minute, but then I remembered ipods keep contacts. Trying to use an ipod like a pda is tough.
 
Same thing happened to me.

I brought it into the apple store, but the "genius" said, that because there was a dent on the speaker grill, that the dead strip was cause by physical damage. I told him it was a common problem, and to google it, but he wouldnt have it.

I went back a day later, talked to a different genius, and got it replaced no questions asked. I had 1 day left on my 1 yr warranty.

i live between the jax and orlando stores, oddly enough they told me id have to make an appt in jax a week in advance, so i made an appt for orlando, when i went there th genius bar was EMPTY, i should have just showed up
