Has anyone found the maximum thickness (in other words, at the camera lens) of the iPhones 17? I’m curious how the Air and 17 compare at their thickest point.

Apple has updated its Accessory Design Guidelines, now featuring the exact physical dimensions of the new iPhone models, including camera plateau and all.

As I previously conjectured from the official renders, the Air’s camera more than doubles the overall thickness, adding an extra 5.68mm, with the plateau alone being 3.03mm. Since the plateau contains the SoC among other things, one could argue that the Air is really 5.64mm + 3.03mm = 8.67mm thick (and 11.32mm including the camera). For comparison, the iPhone 17 is 7.95mm + 3.45mm = 11.4mm.

You can determine the thickness by looking at Apple's Accessory Design Guidelines for Apple Devices document.

Very helpful. Thank you BigBlur & klasma.

As a Pro Max user I was sort of curious about the Air and half wondering whether I should have gone in that direction but I'm basically OK with the size and weight of the PM except that I keep it in my front trouser (pants) pocket with the screen against my thigh to protect it and that does mean that the three camera lenses do create bumps in the fabric of my trousers unless I'm wearing something really baggy. From those dimensions it's pretty clear to me that I would get exactly the same effect with the Air so there's no point in me compromising on battery life (although admittedly the Air is still very respectable on that score, just not the best in Apple's lineup) for no benefit.

Even with the PM in my front pocket I still find the weight sufficiently unnoticeable such that a few times a week I have a momentary panic when I leave the house because I think my phone isn't in my pocket only to tap the pocket and find that it is there. On that basis I don't think the weight saving is worth chasing either, at least for me.

I'm quite a small and slim guy who was previously completely turned off by the thought of large phones but in the 4 years since I went PM I'm really surprised at how well I've taken to it; sometimes it even feels small to me now. Last year when I upgraded my previous PM, when I unboxed the new one and held it in my hand I was convinced that I'd accidentally ordered the smaller Pro model until I put my old and new ones side by side!
