My entire immediate family all share our locations with one another.
Does this hurt your battery? I've turned on location sharing when I was meeting someone to sell something just in case something weird happened but I don't keep it on. I figure if there's an emergency the police can use my phone to locate me.

It's not an example of crash detection failure, but an example of Apple's greed by not giving ppl that feature unless you buy an apple 14.
Yes, Apple is so greedy they're not giving away free iPhone 14... You can't be serious?

The hardware is not in previous iPhone models to make this possible. Apple would love to make all their iPhones have crash detection just for the positive publicity..

I don't understand so many negative comments in this thread. Apple can literally save someone's life and there's those who will say, but they're just doing it for publicity or profit 🙄

"We (you and I, based on my previous column) already knew, for example, that ANY iPhone can be made to work with Globalstar."

A radio (in an IC chip or otherwise) doesn't work without an antenna. And most iPhones do not have a satellite antenna (which is different from a cellular antenna) with sufficient gain.

We have found that Find My doesn't use battery life unless you are using it. If you search a phrase such as: "does find my use battery life" the responses are all over the place. Our kids all live out of the house at this point, but we all want to be able to know where we all are if the worst happens. So we don't turn off location sharing.

No. It's a matter of older iPhones not having the proper hardware to begin with. Do you demand that Samsung upgrade your older HD TV to 4K with a software update?

Apple greed... That seems to anger you. Have you been voting with your wallet purchasing competitor products to send Apple a strong message, and to ultimately find tech happiness for yourself?

My theory... It's because many people are perpetually unhappy. And ragging on some company or person on a public Internet forum gives them a quick boost of feel-good power - something that's otherwise lacking in their lives.

Smart move! I should do the same - thanks.

Who cares if 1B people are tracked by the govt as long as 10 get saved?
You're tracked now by a variety of mechanisms, from logging in to cell towers to face-recognition in security cameras.

Like you, I'd rather the government not track me without a warrant and probable cause. And I live in the UK, where the government has already tried to pass a 'Snooper's Charter' and the second highest number of security cameras per person (the PRC is first). Still, 'Find My ...' is opt-in and you always have a choice. It seems to me that if you trust the people you enable this for, it is a good safety feature. And it is reversible if you break up with your partner or fall out with members of your family. Frankly, unlike governments, most people have neither the time nor the inclination to compulsively track their friends and family members.

I wonder if this is why Apple reverted to the old style antenna band (e.g., from the iPhone 4) on the iPhone 14...

I guess so. I find sometimes making a joke or criticizing a brand can be funny but I can’t just be all negativity about everything. Making fun of Apple for the notch or headphone jack makes sense bud making fun of them for creating something that saves lives doesn’t really make sense.

I'm too private to share my location with others 100% of the time, but this raises a good point that there are times when it would be good to turn sharing on.

All 3 of us (in my family) have location sharing enabled. I track my son when he is on a plane (sometimes it pings!) and am right now taking screen shots of where he vacations. So if he ever wants to look it up, there it is. It helps us not call and say “where are you” because we know and can then figure out how long the person will be gone. Or if they are gone longer than usual and have to do something like feed and pill the cat, I can text to see if he needs someone else to do it (he has autism). Overall, I love it. Location tracking also enabled us to find an Apple Watch that was removed from the wrist and had dropped down under a couch. Not sure we would have found it without it.

Which you usually don't know in advance... that's the very definition of an accident.

If some of you don't turn on location sharing with your family for privacy reasons or because you don't want to be tracked by them, I recommend working on your trust issues and relationships. Just because it's turned on doesn't mean someone is going to monitor your every move. If they do or if you think you need to hide some of your moves, y'all have some more serious issues to work on...

What hardware is that? I'm guessing it's hardware all iPhones have, like accelerometer, gyroscope sensor.

newer accelerometer and gyroscope are the two main listed, as having a higher threshold for detection, but there's additional details

iPhone 14 and Series 8 Watch employ a new higher dynamic range (measurement to 256 Gs) 6-axis (roll, pitch yaw, X, Y, Z) Bosch IMU (inertial measurement unit) that older iPhones/Watches do not use. Apparently is was co-designed with Apple.
