Oh-oh. After the whole promise-gate incident I don’t think this will be well received.
While reading this I imagined you were dangling off a steep cliff clutching some roots with one hand and try to summon help on your 📱with the other.
Strange that it didn’t launch in the BeNeLux yet. The Benelux countries are boxed in between Germany, the UK and France, so coverage can’t be an issue.
Most people in Canada own satellite phones when going camping or dog sledding. They charge $12.5 per minute and $20 per mb. Speed is slower than dialup.
Americans are not a good representation of world population. Outside of the NA bubble, people are actually very well travelled.
For some folks, a cure for cancer that cost more than a Starbucks latte would be criminal.
As of now. Some coverage is better than no coverage and with the money Apple has put into GSAT, they can expand and improve the network.
It is free for 2 years. My bet will be after that it is included with one of the Apple services bundles.
As for why it is US only, there is infrastructure to contact local emergency services. Some can be automated, but I suspect not everything at once.

It depends on how much the fee is. $100k per an use like ER in USA ? $29 per month for subscription ? If I don’t subscribe, can’t I use the function ? Or, when I send an emergency message, will I get a confirmation message for $100k fee ? If I don’t agree on the confirmation, wont they send a rescue team ?

My guess It’s gonna be $x per month. Don’t want the subscription after the trial period , iOS will turn off the function.
This will be a great feature for those who take trips out into the Australian deserts and bushlands.
Would be good if you could pay per use, billed to your account just in case you're broke and lost at the same time lol
For those times I plan on being in the backcountry I’ll still carry my Zoleo satellite communicator but this will be good for those times I end up off grid witout planning it.

Okay? Like I said most people in the world will not be going to remote places on Earth, not a vacation to Hawaii or London.
I cancelled my $12/month fee for my Garmin Inreach Mini and am going to sell it on eBay. Having this feature built in to the phone is AWESOME!
I had considered that with my Zoleo but the iPhone service won’t give weather or texting. You can’t even send an “I’m OK” check in.
