As engineer I must say that these protruding cameras are, in my opinion, bad engineering.
When they are not able to design shorter cameras they should have thicker bodies, if they can´t do it why not use this to give us more battery. I am using my handies always without case and when I put the handy on the table it is lying on the front lens, and as a photographer I know that this is the worst you can do to a camera.
And the new ones get even worse!
Am I the only one that doesn´t like that on an iPhone?

Come on Apple, You can do that better!

You are not the only one.

However, most use a case. This makes the bump disappear, and the phone can still be relatively slim.

That is why Apple designs the phone like it does.

I think that most people dislike the design, or are indifferent towards it. I don't understand the few on this forum that actually like it.

I don't think I have ever brought up comparing Cook to Steve Jobs in this forum before, but this is one case that I wonder if Jobs would have allowed a camera bump design that started with the iPhone 6.

I don't think that Apple intentionally uses a poor design because most people cover it up anyway.

You misunderstood me. My point was that Apple wishes to produce a slim phone. They are apparently unable to design a camera with a similar slim profile, at least with the capabilities they feel are necessary.

Therefore, the camera must protrude. However, most users will utilize a case, which then "hides" the bump, while still allowing a slimmer device (with case on) than if they built the entire phone as thick as the camera.

Of course they don't design the bump as a "feature". It is a necessary evil that most consumers will not see, and probably don't care anyway.

Do we know this for a fact? Has Apple ever come out and publicly said that they design the phone like this so people can slap a case on it?

You guys are missing my point. Maybe I'm communicating it poorly. Here goes:

    • Apple likes thin devices
    • Apple wants a competitive camera installed in their phone
    • Apple apparently cannot engineer a camera as thin as they want their phone (conjecture, but reasonable)
    • Apple knows *most* people will put a case on the phone
    • A case will hide the camera bump, making it a non issue for the vast majority of people. I realize from your previous posts that you are not one of the those people, and that's fine. But Apple can't engineer enough different types of phones to please every single preference. So, this is their compromise.
In summary, no, I don't believe Apple designed the camera bump as a feature (again, my conjecture). However, I think it was a design compromise they made to get what they want (thin device, good camera) at a small cost (design wart that most people will not even see in day to day use).

    Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense and none of your points are new to me. Other people have mentioned the same.

It just wasn't clear (to me anyway) that you meant all that by virtue of the statement you made. Now it is. Thanks.

It’s gotten worse every year but this is the nail in the coffin. Absolutely hideous.

I used to crack jokes here about the iPhone being taken over entirely by the camera bump. It was tongue-in-cheek, but Apple seems intent in validating my jokes.

Closest I can find on record is that Jony Ive called it a pragmatic optimisation.

I don’t use a case with my iPhone, so I likely wouldn’t like it being any thicker than it really is. Plus, a larger battery makes for a heavier device as well.

I think Apple ultimately made the right call here.

Well, I don't agree, but that's neither here nor there.

I'd actually prefer a slightly thicker and heavier phone. I prefer having something solid in my hand. However, I don't use my phone over a long time period such as for streaming media or playing games. I have other devices for all of that.

Those pictures make it look especially bad because the color of the camera bump doesn't match the color of the back, but it is supposed to match according to the most recent rumors.

    Yeah, it's pretty ugly.

I would actually prefer they leave it black, I think. I usually put a thin black case on, mostly for better grip. Because of this, the camera bump doesn't protrude, and the color blends in.

A phone colored camera bump, especially as large as it will be, is going to look funny when it contrasts with a black case.

That being said, I don't really look at the back of my phone, and don't care that much about the appearance of it anyway, so it's a non issue for me.

    I know many disagree.

I’d agree. There are some valid arguments about the camera bump, but the main consideration, is the majority use cases to conceal the camera bump as it is. It’s never really bothered me either, but I do think it would be more aesthetically pleasing if it was flush with the iPhone as it has been for past models.

The design isn’t great thats clear but how often do you look at the back of the phone? I don’t often but I do take pictures often and if it takes amazing pics then that’s the main thing to me.

When it really gets down to it, the bump is not going to change sales that much. I always use a thin case, just to add more grip and the bump is like the notch and not noticed by me.

I am more interested in how the group of cameras work and could care less about the “looks” of the thing.

I've never seen anyone offer up to Apple full plans for a new iphone that didn't address some concern, like battery life or camera bump. My guess, everything is a trade-off and apple takes the trade-off that offers the most of what they want and the least of what they don't.

The company that figures out how to produce and sell a case that takes pictures, makes phone calls, texts, emails, plays games and otherwise functions like an iPhone or Android phone is going to make an insane amount of money.

That's all you'd need to buy is the case. Does everything a normal phone/iPhone does. Probably save customers a ton of money too.

    :)

Am I the only one that would prefer a thinner Max?

Might be one of the few that actually uses the Max without a case, but I really like the camera bump.

The protruding camera is the most retarded thing ever on anything!
I wish my XS was flat and slim.

I’ve never been a fan of the protruding camera - I’d prefer a thicker phone and larger battery. But it’s not so bad when it’s in a case and it falls flush.

That being said, the 2019 protrusion is the ugliest thing Apple have come up with for years. It’s taken me out of the running for a new phone this year. I’m not remotely interested. I’ll stick with my XS Max.

Believe or not, I don’t like cases for phones. I do use them when I travel, but any other time, I carry my phone with me case-less. And then I have my own rule, wherever I set my phone down, it has to be something soft underneath it.

    You are one brave soul.

I am very careful, but stuff happens, accidentally, and you read about it on these forums, where people say, I went case-less....until. I have the apple space grey silicon case on my phone and I dropped the phone once on a hard surface. Thankfully the case did it's job. (But I do have applecare)
