iPhoto '08 crashes when importing Aperture backup

I have an aperture library that is about 17000 images deep, and when I try to import it (without copying) into iphoto '08, it does all images and at the very end crashes. I have enough disk space...so I'm not sure what it's doing.

What is the best way to move from Aperture to iPhoto?

But Aperture runs really slow, even on my C2D SR 2.2ghz machine with 2gb ram...so do I have no other option?

They are both extremely unreliable pieces of garbage. Pick your poison. Sorry.
