iPhoto 08' - External HD to library

My HD is going low and I'm gonna transfer all my pictures to my external HD.

I'm just worried if I re-transfer my pictures from the external HD to iPhoto. What's gonna happen if my external HD is unplugged? Will there be an error like photos not detected.

Is there like an automatic feature on iPhoto for external HD photos?
 
What I did was just transfer the whole pictures folder to my FreeAgent HD, erase the pictures on my mac and boot up iPhoto. It will ask you for a photo library, click choose, find your pictures folder on your external and you're good to go.
