Ok so I open my iphoto 08 and like I cant move any pictures around from one album to the next. It wont let me even move them around within the folder. the under the recent folder thing at the top of the left hand side it says hold. what does this mean? There is picture below.

That means you have looked in that folder recently. If you wanna get rid of it, add a new event then delete it. But every time you go into events and click on one it will appear.

Nope, works fine on mine. Just dragged a photo from one album to another and it went right across.

That Hold thing is only present in iPhoto 7.0. You should update to 7.0.1
 
Chundles is right, just check Apple's iPhoto forums here. If you did upgrade, then try a re-install. Perhaps you can download the update separately from Apple's download site and try installing it again.
