    When I start iPhoto '08 (opening a library of about 4,200 photos) I get a spinning beach ball for more than 1 minute before I can use the app. I have tried various things, including:
    - rebuilding the library
    - rebuilding the thumbnail cache
    - deleting the plist
    - repairing disk permissions

    None of those helped. I have 2GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be the problem. Does anyone have any ideas about what I might do? If it can't be fixed, I guess my options are:
    1. archive some of the photos to an external (presumably I would do this by exporting the photos and then deleting them from iPhoto);
    2. switch to Aperture; or
    3. learn to live with it.

    I would be grateful for any advice.

    I have the same problem. MBP w/ 4gb of ram and not nearly the amount of pictures you have, maybe 700 or so. Anyone know why?

    Hmm, interesting, I have a lot of photos as well but iPhoto on my new iMac opens instantly even on first launch. It generally takes under a second and subsequent launches are a fraction of second including pics.
    I visit the Apple store a lot and they have about 25,000 photos on their Macs and iPhoto launches really fast.
    I would try resetting the PRAM first and repairing permissions. If no go then put in the install disk and boot to the install screen and open Disk Utility and check for any disk errors. If no errors exist then I would recommend an Archive and Install which will preserve your apps and settings.
