Iphoto 5 and deleted images show up as gray boxes

I needed to free up some space on the HD so I deleted a number of images within the iphoto library. There were alot of duplicate pics etc. so I deleted these plus others and dumped the trash within iphoto but now when I launch iphoto I have all these gray boxes where the deleted pics once were. When I click on them or try to move them to the desktop nothing happens except for a continuous spinning icon. I then have to force quit iphoto.

How can I get rid of the empty gray boxes? 😕

Also, how can I stop iphoto from duplicated images?😕

Did you delete the images using iPhoto or did you do it with Finder? It's the nature of iPhoto to create a duplicate image for any image you modify in any way. I guess you could cut back on duplicates by not editing anything. There'll still be thumbnail images but they're redundantly small in the scheme of things.

A library rebuild may or may not help the grey box problem.
