iPhoto and iTunes Question

I've just made the switch to Mac at home and I find it frustrating that instead of linking to photos when I drag and drop my pics for viewing in iPhoto and music for iTunes, these programs make another copy of the songs and photos that I already have on my hardrive...this eats up so much space for no reason...

is there a way around this?

in itunes or iphoto, go to preferences->advanced
uncheck the check box "Copy files..."

In the preferences for both programs you can choose for them to not automatically manage your media. In that case, extra copies won't be made.
