How can I verify that my time machine is properly backing up my photos in iPhoto?

Make a time machine backup.Take a look inside the last time machine backup, check if iPhoto library has the same date and the same size (in Gb) as the original iPhoto library that you can find in your home folder under images.

Or you can backup your iPhoto library (home folder/images/iPhoto library) to an eternal HDD, then delete it from your home folder, then restore the iPhoto library from time machine, and see if it contains all your photos.

From what I learned working as a sys admin.

Backup team ALWAYS has a backup. If the restore works, well, that's a completely different question :)

What temporary HDDs?
The OP uses Time Machine, so he has an external HDD always connected to the Mac. He can do what i suggested by copying his iPhoto library to that HDD.

He's making a joke based on the OP's typo that reads "eternal HD".
