You can still have the control. You can keep your photos organized however you like, and just uncheck "copy items into iPhoto library" under "advanced" in the preferences. Once you have the photo folder titled, then just import that folder as an event into iPhoto.

If you ever want to go back to Windows (if you were possessed or something...haha), then you can just export your iPhoto library and copy that onto your Windows machine.

yep, i do exactly your first point. i use iPhoto (just to browse), I just keep the folders managed separately. I have found thought that there are some small quirks when you don't copy the pictures to your iphoto library upon import - for example, when setting a desktop background, you can't go through the iphoto options - you just have to add the folders

I'm a new mac user, and am having some trouble in regards to iPhoto. I have a picture in iPhoto that I want to upload to the web, but I have no clue how to find it. I'm fine with iPhoto doing all the organizing and stuff like that, but how to I navigate to my photos in finder?

You don't -- or at least you shouldn't! Stay out of the finder! iPhoto organizes that file in itw own way so that it can work for you. If you want to upload a photo to the web, find it in iPhoto (app) and then either drag it to your desktop, or use the export function (this will allow you to choose what size you want it to be) and export it to your desktop and then upload from there.

If you want to upload to the web, select the photo (or photos) you want IN iPhoto, then either export it or right-click and select "Show File" to reveal it on Finder, either way, upload the resultant file.

Sorry for being late to this discussion, and thanks to all those who added their bit. I'm not a PC convert -- I've been using both macs and PCs since 1993 and I've used macs for everything personal for most of that time. I was happy with my 2004 powerbook and an old iLife version until I was seduced by the new macbook design and switched. It was a good decision overall (my old mac was quite slow) but I had quite a few disappointments. And the new iPhoto is one of them.

Just trust iPhoto for me is not good enough. I want my individual photo files back, as I had in previous iPhoto versions! I don't want to make several steps and having conflicting file names for the same pictures. I want it simple but I also want to see each individual photo so I can open it on photoshop without exporting. And I don't want to copy photos from my camera manually, rename them manually, and then ask iPhoto to index it so I can have a nice slideshow. That sounds like something Windows would ask me to do, frankly speaking.

I understand those who find bliss in leaving everything to iPhoto, because the interface is really good. But why on Earth Apple has to annoy people like me and so many others that posted here, who just want easy access to their individual photo files? I don't want a lifetime engagement with iPhoto. And I like my photoshop, thanks.

This thread has answered my own query about how the Mac handles photos.

I was confused by having my folder structure that I brought over from a pc, but the photos just 'stop', they don't seem to be in the 'right place' anymore. I suppose iPhoto has them somewhere.

One thing that I think iphoto falls down on is that my camera, at least, sometimes loses its date and time, and has to be reset. In the meantime iPhoto creates events based on a VERY wrong date, and if I don't notice this happening for a while, I often forget the proper date myself.

If I had managed the files Windows-style, then I would have dated the folders and there would never be any problem in identifying the date of the photos. With iPhoto I now have that problem.
