But, if you are in the field, use the camera connection kit after taking photos with a DSLR, for example, you can do some quick editing right there and then and have a good idea of what the final will look like without carrying around a laptop.

Just one possible example :)

Yeah exactly. I meant that if you have your computer around and you already have a photo in the computer, it's easier to do edits on a laptop than on an iPad, but in many situations, especially if you are using the iPad to take photos, you won't need a computer to do quick edits.

It's important to note that that is actually purchases, not users. A single family can share an iTunes account and one purchase could mean 2 or 3 users (downloads to multiple iPads or iPhones). Also, in many families the iPad is a shared device. So typically, purchases < users < downloads

Yes this is true, I have an iPad 2 and iPhone 4 and app will be downloaded to both devices. This is also true for Mac apps - which is really nice for my MacBook Pro and Macbook Air.

Still I would think an MacBook AIR with Photoshop would be better, I have Photoshop CS5 - but its on my Xeon for use with Lightwave 3D and Vue. I have an Canon T2i - but I think editing on any tablet would be just a pain. But that is me personally.

Did you try rebooting your iPhone? That usually works. Also, make sure you're using the latest iOS.

yep i also installed it a few times on my "iPad" but its not working. i think something is up with my iTunes on the iPad anyway, it seems to be confused with my two accounts which im using at the same time. it keeps saying "xy and 37 apps cant be updated" when i actually dont even have any updates o_O got a similar issue with photoshop touch now, its loading but stuck on the first screen and not moving. restore here i probably come ...

iPhoto for iPad

I love my iPad, but this iPhoto for iPad, I don't get. If you need photo editing on the go, an 11" MacBook Air is much more efficient and hardly less portable.
I consume stuff on my iPad, play games, watch a movie, surf the web.
But as soon as I need to do anything productive, I grab the mba. Even longish emails I find a little inconvenient because of the way you have to balance the thing on your lap to able to type semi properly.

first problem, not everyone has an mac book air :p

At $5 (rounding up), this app really is a steal. It does so much! And it does it exceedingly well. I tested it out on a dark, fuzzy photo and within minutes I'd gotten the picture sharper, brighter, clearer and, with one of the effects, cool looking  And with the new screen, the picture really popped.

I especially love the magnifying lens. When the photo is at regular size and you hold two fingers down on the screen it appears. It's one of those awesome little details coupled with fun animation that Apple has always excelled at. Seeing it gave me that "Old School Apple" feel--you feel that the creators not only went the extra mile with the program, but really cared about it and wanted it to be the best it could be. I also appreciated the optional word balloons to help the user get familiar with the options. It's a complex program, no question, but it aims to be as user friendly as possible while also being as good as possible. Thumbs up!

I bought the app but I am dissapointed. You can get most of the features in free apps. It's basically Photos 2.0. It works well on the Ipad, but on the iphone it is very cumbersome, and confusing due to miniature size of everything and the frequent use of hidden (in a menu) options. You can't even undo without shaking the phone! lol

Most serious issue is the inability to synch with the iPhoto on a Mac. If you only own an iPad, hover, then it is a good choice.

No balloons on the iPhone. That makes using it on the iPhone much more confusing for new users. You have to guess at what every option does or just use trial and error.

Just bought my iPad yesterday and I'm wondering if I should buy iPhoto. I love it on my computer, it's where I store all of my pictures. But why would I edit pictures on my iPad? What's the point? I don't plan on taking any pictures on my iPad; does that mean people are actively syncing photos to their iPad just so they can edit them?

Can someone explain the logic?

2 reasons for me personally, both relating to vacations:

1. to stream photos taken from my iphone to my ipad while on vacation. I usually bring my ipad for watching movies at night etc and my iphone becomes my camera. I have it on airplane mode while in the US so the camera is the primary function. I use the built in photo stream, but for movies from my iPhone, I use Photo Transfer App - a well worth purchase.

2. relating to the vacation - sharing photos. That journal feature is incredibly easy to use and share photos. I like to keep my Mom updated quickly because when I get back from my vacation, I find the rest of 'life' happens quickly enough that it's more difficult to sit down and share the memories than doing it every night after the kids go to sleep while away.

Now if only iMovie would import photos from the camera roll, then my iPhone movie editing would be done before I get back as well! :) As it stands, that's another impressive i-os app (but for another thread :)

cheers,
Keebler

I wouldn't edit on Photoshop though. Apps like Aperture or Lightroom are much easier to do edits on photos. Photoshop really is a single image editing tool and isn't designed to edit libraries.

About editing on an iPad, I never tried, but I will when mine arrives next week.

And the "find and display similar images" feature is a steal on a 5$ app. Neither Photoshop nor Lightroom or Aperture has that feature yet.

Well worth $5

This is a very nice app, with its own "personality". It really shows off the new iPad, but it's fun and useful, too, so it's not just a demo.

Last year's steal was Garage Band, and if you're getting a new iPad, you should buy both Garage Band and iPhoto. They'll be the best ten bucks you ever spent.

Oh, and add Photo Booth and Cards to your list. That will bring your total to.... Ten Bucks. (Cards is free, and I think Photo Booth already comes on the iPad.)

Aperture on iPad...

Aperture on the iPad has got to be next, and is already being worked on I'm sure.

However, as already mentioned, and it won't harm to re-iterate, these photo editing apps on the iPad will only *truly* be useful if they sync bidirectionally over the wifi with your Aperture library on the Mac. Not full syncing (you wouldn't store the full library on the iPad) but selective syncing for the images you choose.

As it stands, it all is too disjointed and disconnected. It's really a bit of a toy app currently. Useful, sure. But it could become a big part of a proper photography processing workflow.

A question - is there no way within IOS iPhoto to use a picture as your wallpaper? Did I miss this feature or is it just not there?

FWIW - I see myself using this app a lot but mainly for the journal feature. This will be great for easily sharing pictures when traveling.

I'm pretty sure we'll get all that with Aperture 4. There's a lot of tech that needs to be updated on Aperture, and the new version can't be too far now.

As others have mentioned, playing nice with iPhoto and Aperture on the Macs should be the logical next step. Realistically, I don't need my whole aperture library on my iPad....but what I would like to do is be able to quickly/easily send a project to my iPad, do all the people tagging while sitting down in front of the TV, and then send the versions back to my macbook pro and Aperture library.

Great App and well worth the relatively meager price. I am very impressed by its capabilities. They have absolutely shamed Adobe/Photoshop with this.

Wow thats just incredible, Apple is just printing money nowadays.
I do love iPhoto though, extremely well made app.

So they made $5 million on sales. What do you think it cost Apple to develop the IOS version of iPhoto? I can tell you it was a LOT more than $5 million. I've priced out a few software projects and believe me $5M does not buy as much as you'd think it would

But over time they might make back their investment and even if they don't I'm sure Apple will sell more iPads. My guess is that Apple does not intend to make money with this app but needs apps like this to drive iPad sales.

I hope Apple continue to update it.

Major version updates are a bit of a black hole on the AppStore right now. iWork is quite severely in need of one IMO; not sure if it's the lack of revenue that's putting them off continuing investment in it.

It basically killed off competitive productivity apps, so Apple need to make sure they make it especially good.

Am I the only one who isn't that impressed with this app? I have Camera+ and find it much easier to use with better looking photos after editing. iPhoto isn't bad but I wish I had saved my $5.

But Apple made $5 million in just 10 days. Surely there will be many more $ to come in the future?

Absolutely agreed. They really will have to upgrade the iWork apps to match the desktop equivalents.

But I'm not sure if it killed off competitive productivity apps. Other tablets are all still struggling with getting any sort of credible productivity apps.

That sounds really nice. And, for my own curiosity, are you going to then sync your iPad to your iPhoto app on your Mac? Does it work like that?

I don't actually think I will, because I don't actually like using iPhoto to manage my photos, and the originals will still be on the memory card. Probably when I get back home from the trip I'll copy the images from the memory cards onto a NAS and then delete them from the iPad. You bring up a good point about edited versions of the photos -- how will I save those? Will I even save them? I assume I would. I'll have to play around before I leave to figure out the best workflow :)

It's great for looking at your pictures on your vacation and editing them there, but there isn't a great way to integrate and synchronize the photos on the iPad with your grand iPhoto library at home.
Just like my Macbook is able to access the iPhoto library stored on the NAS, so should the iPad. Let's face it, photos just take up way too much space for local storage.
