When I use iPhoto to import photos directly from my camera, where on the hard drive do they get stored?

iPhoto library

default is in your iPhoto Library folder inside your Pictures folder in your Home folder. Unless you tell iPhoto Preference NOT to copy to your Library.

They get stored in the iPhoto library which is a package. This is normally stored in your Pictures folder. But you should not really care: the whole point of using iPhoto is that you don't have to manage your pictures at the filesystem level.
