All pictures in my iphoto just show up as grey thumbnails. Tried library rebuild per directions, still no luck. Any solutions?

Care. 
Why would you say not to call Apple Care? Photos are some of the most important things on my computer and I'd do or pay whatever it takes to get them back if they were in danger of being lost.
Please explain. If you have a simpler, better solution, do share it.
