iPhoto questions...store photos on external drive??

I just installed a 120 GB internal SSD drive in my iMac. I don't want to use what little storage I have on photos and home videos. My question is when I import them into iPhoto, can they be stored on an external drive?
 
Yes, this is the setup I have now. Just make sure to have a backup somewhere in case your external crashes or dies.
