one thing is that by not changing the original name, you can have multiple pictures in iPhoto being "named" the same.

if it was changed at the Finder level, you'd have to attach a sequence number or something.

it's may be odd, but i wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. afterall, there's absolutely no problem if you use iPhoto as a front-end and used export features.

you make a good point about the sequence number. must be the years of brain rot from using windows. :) still looking for clarification on the export feature and what exactly it does...is it a simpler form of drag and drop?

let me ask a seriously stupid question...what does export do? i've only ever dragged and dropped. does it send the file to another user defined app?

export is just that, exports pictures from iPhoto to anywhere. (not to an app.) it gives several options, as files, webpage, etc. and each of them have a little more options beyond just simple drag and drop. (so it's the other way around - drag and drop is a simpler version of export.)

what i want iPhoto to add is a support for movie clips... it's pretty much a standard feature of most digital cameras now...

video would be nice..
you say exports to anywhere but not to an app? so export just converts the file to another file type (webpage, etc)? I'll have to look at it again to clarify i suppose. or if you could clarify. sorry.

after getting used to all its quirks, there is still one thing keeping me from using iphoto...

ALBUM HIERARCHIES!

for the love of god, i might have 100albums theres no way i'm going to have all of those on there. I take a lot of pictures, right now they are in the finder all nice and neat in folders. for example, i might have

Vacations>
Asia>
Japan>Tokyo
China>Countryside
Europe>
France
Germany
Family>
Kids
Grandparents

and so on and so forth... you can see how it would get pretty busy... if only they had a way to put albums in albums, my life would be more complete

That's why I recommended iPhoto Buddy earlier on in the thread. It allows you to do exactly that in a slightly more roundabout way but has the benefit of keeping your iPhoto library trim and nimble. I had exactly the same pet peeve and this little app has been great.

You can also prepare photos directly for e-mail through iPhoto to mail.app, entourage or several other mail programs.

This is nice as it does put the new title of the pic in the email message, in the title and subj. line. Although if you drag a photo thumbnail from iPhoto the name is the original.

But I also just use web pages to display pics for eople to see but I guess if I sent them I would use export or the email feature in iphoto where I could select several at a time and it would include all of then in the email.

I really like iPhoto Buddy. I have my libraries set up by season (i.e. Spring '04, Summer '04) since I tend to remember events by time of year. Then I'm only working with 3 months worth of pictures in each library and I can create albums for all my pictures within the library. Works great for me.

The biggest thing about iphoto for me is i wanted to use it per clients and I want to import ever picture i take from the camera into iphoto but i want to click the main library and some not come up there. Like the erotic photograhy i do, i dont want anyone to just be able to go through it, just the people that need to. Cant I put those pictures in a photo album and keep them out the main library and even password protect that album? Come on now, thats almost a must for me, if I cant figure out how to do that then im done with iphoto!

OK I know I keep going on, but check out iPhoto Buddy already! That way you can have a different library for each client and keep your porn seperate. You can't password protect but at least it stops them loading up automatically and isnt too easy to stumble across them accidently.

I also manage my photos using separate user accounts. I assume that with Spotlight, it won't bring up photos from other accounts that are "private". One feature I am hoping for next time is a nested album feature. Another smart album that finds photos by dimensions. I like to keep my 2048x1536 photos separate from my 768x512 photos for example. Or a smart folder that separates pictures by camera. It would be nice to be able to tag photo metadata like with MP3 files. Another feature would be a "scratch" photo library to import into and remove and clean up the photos before commiting those photos a library of my choice. And a easy way to delete a photo from an album and library in one step.

It's not porn...it's "erotic". :)
I'll have to check out iphoto buddy since you've mentioned it 5 times now. It must be the solution to our problems..or at least a step in the right direction.

FWIW...I have long since switched to iView Media Pro. For me, still running Jaguar and on iPhoto 2, it was a no-brainer...

While Media Pro isn't free, you can try it for a few weeks. I personally prefer the organization and it would solve the problem at hand...

I want to put in a plug for iPhoto Diet. It is an app that can easily delete uneeded duplicates that are created when a photo is edited, or rotated. It is great a culling out and deleting extra photo dups with nice choices as to what it cleans out.
