Also, is there a way to make collages - or would I need another kind of program to do so?

You can do this in Preview that came with your Mac. Or lots of other apps I'm sure.

In iPhoto? No, but as Apple Fanboy says, you can do it in Preview using the Annotations option.

Opened Preview and played around a bit...

Now it looks like it permanently CHANGED my original photos in iphoto to the way I left it in PREVIEW.

Do I need to change photo name so that I can keep orig. photo and preview version (with text) both in iPhoto?

It sounds like you've chosen in iPhoto Preferences to Edit Photos with Preview. If that's the case, then it will display the photo in iPhoto in it's edited form.

If you Right/Ctrl click on the edited picture, then you will find the option to Revert To Original. If you want to see both in iPhoto, then duplicate before you edit.
