What other features would others like to see in iPhoto? Here's a short list I have...

3) Email via "outlook" and not just the Apple Mail program.

Well, since you said Outlook, I'm assuming that you're using classic for your e-mail??? Anyways, I saw over on Macminute.com, that someone has posted a patch to be able to e-mail directly from iPhoto thru EntourageX.

Check it out.

Brightness and contrast adjustment is great, but if only Apple would implement a Photoshop-like "auto levels", "auto contrast", or "auto color" then those serious about image quality on the printout could take Photoshop out of the loop.

Auto Levels would neither automatically please those 'serious about image quality" nor take photoshop out of the loop, for those that need it in the loop.
Normalizing a photo such isn't always instantly the best thing an image needs anyway.

And the purpose of iPhoto is a shoebox, a good filing system, not an editing system. It is probably okay for apple to step on light photomanipulation programs toes a bit, so a lot of snapshotters can get something useable, without having to move to something else, but it shouldn't even attempt to bog down the application with too much image controls.

I'd be happy if simply the placement of the library, and naming of rolls and images were more like iTunes. I don't those concerns have been dressed fully yet, from what I read of 1.1.1.

Leave Adobe in the loop when need be.

I've done the update and had no problem. Everything is still intact, iPhoto just updates the photoalbums.

I do like the contrast and brightness, though, they work better than photoshop because they seem to be optimized for pictures. Not sure how they're doing it, but you really can't get the same levels as in photoshop, so its hard to wash out. Works really well on underexposed photos.

Still can't see how to import selected photos

Does anyone know if it is possible to import selected photos from a camera, like you can in image capture?

Taking the plunge

So I decided to finally take the plunge and start using iPhoto. Until now I've been using my awkward-yet-comfortable scheme from my PC days to organize my photos, and I'm getting jealous of everyone who gushes about how easy iPhoto makes it to organize your photos.

SO. I have a coupla questions.

1) Until now I've kept several versions of every photo - the original, a web version, and email version, and a print version (whichever I needed for each photo). Is this possible and/or necessary with iPhoto?

2) Once I've imported all of my originals into iPhoto, is it safe to delete them from my Pictures folder?

3) Going on the advice of the latest Macworld, I'm going to check out PhotoAccess.com for printing (apparently much better than iPhoto's, and Ofoto, which I used to use also scored poorly). Has anyone used PhotoAccess, and if so, what's your opionion?

EXIF support? where?

Digi Photo fan here... and loving iphoto more by the release...

what kind of support does iPhoto offer to EXIF??

I can't even extract the EXIF data... or am I just ignorant.. if someone can help me.. would be great.. cheers!

I'm with blakespot. iPhoto *definitely* needs to have one button image optimization that attempts to correct color, brightness, saturation, sharpness, etc. Sure, it may not perfect (AutoLevels in PhotoShop isn't), but it would make editing photos so much easier. Funky colors can be a big problem with photos (especially casual photographers who may not know how to set white balance, etc.) and iPhoto should provide all the BASIC tools necessary to make photos presentable. I'm not asking for dodge and burn tools or fancy image manipulation, just that iPhoto give us the abilities present in even those $30 amateur digiphoto apps you can buy off the shelf for Windows PCs.

good question, i've been wondering that too. after all, it sucks having 2 copies of all the pictures.... if indeed that's what's exactly happening. but they seem a bit poorly organized within iphoto's folder structure, as some folks have complained.

also, blakespot's request for auto levels and such seems reasonable. he's not saying he doesn't want to use photo at all, but for simple printing of pics right away, he wants to have that option, rather than having to go to iphoto, then to photoshop for auto... seems reasonable. not trying to oust photoshop in the least.

I cant seem to get the update! I just get sent a HTML file - no hqx file. Any ideas? Are there any other sources of it?

iPhoto +?

I was just having a thought about Aple's iApps and thier counterparts. Right now we have this sort of table set up:

iMovie ------- Final Cut Pro
iDVD --------- DVD Studio Pro (I think its called, vaguely)
But then we have
iTunes ------- ??????
iPhoto-------- ??????

In that little matrix there are no professional counterparts to those two iApps. A lot of people have been speculating about iPhoto replacing photoshop or such nonsense, but I think it would be much more realistic to speculate about Apple making professional programs in the same way it has for iMovie and iDVD.

Any Thoughts?

You answered your own question... iTunes counterpart > ProTools and all the other myriad pro music apps
iPhotos counterpart > Photoshop, etc...

Apple provided what you are calling the "pro tier" for the video apps, because if they had not, there would be no affordable AND useable solution. Avid (digidesign again) is using a gouge the corporate pro/sumer business model and charging a minimum ten times as much. The low end stuff couldn't provide the quality, as they would probably be too busy chasing wintel to care.

But the consume/create table you are wanting to create, is not really one of apples intent to be carried that far at least. They know creation is important to their consumer base, but they are only filling in existing gaps in the market.
It goes back to the iWalk, iPad whatever rumors, they are more likely to enter the fray when it really isn't being properly taken care of otherwise-- its a bad time to come out with a PDA with their being melded in to cell phones and the market being saturated.

I could imagine some ways, such as with the audio.midi layer, that music creation could be made easier with existing pro apps, and iPhoto is already taking care of helping along the pro photo apps, such as Photoshop. iPhoto is sort of being THE app for some people, who only want to do that much with their photos, and an ADJUNCT app for people needing the power of Photoshop.

Yep, but they're free! :D I'm going to try it right now. I'll post back how it works.

Cleo, let us know if it is a B***h or if it is an easy hack. Also, how well does it work with the photos? I wonder why they would disable that?

OK. Wow, that was a cinch! A guy a MacOSHints.com posted a couple of hints in the discussion that definitely help. I have zero experience using the Interface Builder and did it in about 10 minutes.

"Enhance" seems to do what it says. I wouldn't personally rely on it (PhotoShop should be arriving tomorrow :)) but for fast printing, it seems to do the trick.

I'm putting up a screen shot so you'll believe me. :D
(the picture is of this hilarious auto body shop on US 19 that is shaped like a dinosaur... cracks me up)

DOES iPHOTO really Utilize Altivec?

hey everyone -

I'm thinking that many consumers want to use iPhoto and iTunes which are both optimized for altivec.... how do these programs work on the G3 (ibook).

is there a difference when you go from the G3 to the G4 when using iPhoto and iTunes.

I'm thinking that word processing and internet and the rest of 'consumer stuff' should mostly be the same right>??

I can only speak to altivec with iTunes, which tends to cut ripping time in half on comparitively clocked g3/g4s. iPhoto uses the quartz engine quite a bit, for resizing the thumbnails on the fly mostly, but I don't know if iPhoto or the quartz engine rely on altivec that much, especially for the types of changes that iPhoto allows.

I wouldn't expect much used in iPhoto that isn't already being hit by the os X finder itself, so a g3/g4 comparison in that light might answer your question.
