It's very strange, whenever I use a proxy that works find through Firefox or Chrome on the iPad, it loads the iPlayer and indicates nothing as far as geographical restrictions go, but when a video begins to play it says in an iPhone OS dialogue "you are not authorized to open this file."

I have a feeling that while there is an HTTP proxy in effect, it is not being fully applied, and most importantly not being applied to the video plug-in for Safari.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff

I use a VPN connection and I don't have any issues at all. Since you're using a proxy I'd say that's likely where the problem exists. While a proxy is in place you're probably traceable to your origination point. Try tvcatchup and see if it does the same thing to you. They can be one of the toughest to get around as they also block many known VPNs as well.

I feel that I can rule out the proxy as causing the problem, for as I said above it works flawlessly with my Macbook in Firefox or Chrome with the iPlayer. I'm watching Doctor Who in HD right now.

Which VPN service would you recommend? I'm off to north Africa on monday for the next 5 weeks and would like to get iPlayer. Last time I was there the proxy service I had failed to work on my iPhone.
I also want access to YouTube which is also blocked.

similar problem

I just upgraded my iphone to OS 4 and I can't play any videos through proxy server. my wife has 3.1.3 running and i can get hers working fine through the same proxy...
annoying because i can't listen to UK radio through my phone any more (I'm in Aus).

any ideas anyone ?
tks,

Ben.

@jamin75 I am also in Australia and use the Tunein Radio app on iphone/ipad. It contains all the same radio facilities that iplayer does (both live and saved) and you can also record a show to listen to later.
