So I bought a 2002 2nd generation iPod (model A1019) off eBay. It was marked "untested" so I didn't know what to expect. The only reason I went for it was that it sold for FAR cheaper than "Woking" models. It arrived today and I plugge into my Power Mac G5 with a FireWire 400 cable and hoped for the best.

To my joy, the apple logo came on and iTunes recognised it straight away and even told me to update from 1.4 to 1.5. I let it charge for a good 3-4 hours, but when I disconnected it, it just went off. It will only turn on when plugged in.

Being so old, I suspect it might need a battery replacement. Any experts able to give their opinions? I'm not used to fixing smaller devices.

If you have any other ideas as to what the problem is or could give me tips on battery replacement for this relic, please let me know! :)

Click here for battery replacement instructions.

Indeed, it sounds like your battery has completely crapped out; if it's the original battery, it's had a long life and it's prolly time to replace the poor dear. The batteries themselves are getting more difficult to find for iPods of that era, but I'm sure some specialty battery places have them.

    Best of luck!
