I bought a 256GB ZIF SSD on eBay to upgrade my 5.5G iPod Video (Model: MA446LL). However, after installing it, the iPod is now extremely slow to respond and also makes long pauses in the middle of playing Apple Lossless songs (it doesn't happen when playing AAC). The issue gets worse as the drive fills up.

The seller emailed me the following:
"You can download a patch to apple's official BBS. Can be solved: playing Apple Lossless songs
(it doesn't happen when playing AAC).<---Apple has long acknowledged that have this problem,
Has released the patch."

Does anyone know what he's talking about and where to get this patch and how to install it?

I don't think Apple has came out with any firmware patches, just whatever firmware is available in iTunes. How many songs do you have on it?

Since it's lossless only, about 7500 when full. But I tried with 3500 and 500 as well. It pauses less with fewer songs on it.

After a lot of communication back and forth with the Chinese seller, I have concluded that I have to return the SSD. However, before I do, I would appreciate if someone could give me some insights into why I'm having these issues. It feels like the iPod pauses because the drive is too slow. But it works fine with a 160GB hard drive. Can a 256GB SSD really be slower than a 160GB hard drive?

I would also like to hear from those of you who have successfully upgraded their 5.5G iPod Videos to 256GB. Did the UI become less responsive? Any issues plying Apple Lossless files? I want to sync with iTunes and not use a different OS. If everything worked perfect for you, then please let me know what parts you used. My model is MA446LL.

It should be a lot faster than the normal hard drive, i was thinking about going the ssd route for my 7th gen. In the end i decided on a iflash quad card micro sd card setup. This one is super fast when accessing music on the go, but is slower at transferring the music. I only have lossless files on my ipod and there are no long pauses when selecting tracks

Ive got about 550gb of lossless on mine, it doesnt matter how much music i have, there is no difference to how long a track takes to start up, its instant

Thanks for the info. I may go with the iFlash card as well then. Hopefully it will work with lossless files on my 5.5G iPod Video as well. But since it's the 30GB version (32MB RAM vs 64MB in 60/80GB version), I'm still not 100% convinced that it will work. If anyone can confirm, that would be great!
