Have a friend with a dell axim. Had forgot about it. It actually is better then the ipod. Just as the Treo 650 is better then the Ipod. Depends on what you want to use it for. 5th Gen Ipod is the same ol Ipod with video playback of converted files.

If you want to take 30-60GB of Music with you everywhere you go then go for it. Other then that it's not like you're going to listen to even 4GB of music in a day. I only own an ipod photo so I can keep it in my car. Other then that not needed.

I'm asking this on a purely hardware level.

AND that is why you fail!!, never should you look at something from only Software or only Hardware, one might mean more to you but with out the other to back it up it is useless.

example

a PC with 3000 worth of hardware running Windows 3.1 or a 499 Mac Mini running tiger? even though the PC has better hardware a Mac Mini should smoke it in day to day use!

I just played with all the new iPods in Tokyo. (5% discount and no tax to foreigners at "The MAC Store" in Akihabara)

I didn't like the 5G much. The screen was really hard to see in the store. Granted the store was really well lit. The nano tho, that was awesome.

I've decided to get neither a 5G or an Axim. I found the perfect solution! The new Sony N1 camera (came out TODAY) can play mpeg video 30fps on it's 3" screen. 8megapixels, and I can use all the Memory stick DUOs I have laying around.

Thats a pretty cool little gadget. If it only werent for the 37 memory cards at $120 bucks a pop to hold all my videos and the crappy lense I might be interested. There is no perfect pocket media device YET.
