or they will be updating it silently at any time, personally i won't be waiting for that.

Yeah with the iPod touch there’s no regular update schedule therefore there’s no likely time of the year that it will be updated. But I do think it will be either updated or discontinued before wwdc when iOS 13 will be announced since iOS 13 will not likely support the current iPod. It would be somewhat bad form of Apple to continue selling a device that won’t be supported by its announced and soon-to-come software.
But I believe it’s more likely to be updated than discontinued, in light of reference code found in iOS and the prediction by MCK.

I would hope that they include storage options up to at least 512GB, preferably 1 TB for people who still use iPods for their music collection.

I would love that, but with Apple pushing their services (apple music) these days, I’m not getting my hopes up.

At this point I don't think it's gonna happen, but they may release one and market it with their new services. If they do come out I don't expect storage options to change much

Seems like it's a no show. Either that or Apple is going to sneak one in September.

In my opinion, the best chance of an update has always been September.

If there is no update then, I think you can write it off.

Yeah with the iPod touch there’s no regular update schedule

Look back through the releases for the Touch. It didn't happen every time but, when a new model was released, it usually was in September.

I know it had a regular release pattern back then but I don’t think that has much relevance now that all regularity is gone.

That would go for any product that Apple sells but, in the past for the iPod update, it was almost always in September.
Not quite following this response. Again, I know it was usually September, but I don’t think the past is relevant here because the pattern is disrupted.

The reason it has been September is because of the iOS update schedule (Apple wants to give a newly sold device at least a year of the latest iOS version). We can assume that the Touch 6 will run iOS 13 since Apple would have either killed the Touch or updated it before last September's iOS 12 release. If Apple doesn't think iOS 14 (September 2020) will run on a Touch 6, they will either kill the Touch or will release the Touch 7 before the iOS 13 release in September (i.e. September is the drop dead date).

You are correct that it could be any time but, Apple is not speedy and I think that they will wait till the last moment (September) if they release anything at all.

Looking back at the release dates, I've noticed NONE of the iPod touch models launched with new iPhones or major iOS versions. The 5th gen is the closest releasing a few weeks after the iPhone 5 in October. Just an observation.

Apple waiting for the one year deadline sounds like a much more plausible theory (as opposed to releasing in September just because they did before—if they did), but again, who knows. And I’m not entirely sure one year is the minimum support for sold devices, but it sounds plausible.

Also I have to retract my earlier theory in this thread. For some reason, I was assuming iOS 13 was going to drop support for the current 6th gen iPod touch (maybe because the mini 4 has the same A8 processor and I assumed that losing iOS 13 support was the reason the mini was updated now). But I think you’re right, iOS 13 will only drop support for A7 devices and below, which means the 6th gen should be supported until September 2020.

Now if I had to guess, I’d say the iPod touch will be dropped or updated some time before fall, probably updated.

I'm not updating my Touch 6 past iOS 10 in any case :).
Good move. iOS 10 was a solid software. Not on the level of 6, but definitely stable and smooth. Also, the UI looks much better than the ugly mess of iOS 11-12.

I still think iOS 6 looked the best, but the UI of 10 is the next best IMO.

lol so... WHY would the introduce the new iPod BETWEEN Apple Events?!

makes NO sense

My iPod touch 5 is stuck with iOS 9.3.5, & my old iPad with iOS 10, but iOS 9 is more stable i noticed.
I got a new iPad from my gramma for getting into med school a couple months ago, but my MacBook & iPod need upgrading lol
