Its sort of like asking why you can't ride your tricycle on the interstate. There may be some sort of way of translating the protocal, but why go slow, when you should be going fast?
People these days have 4 to 5 megapixel cameras in the under 1000 dollar range, using memory cards of up to 160, 256 meg or more, and it takes some time for those shots to dump via USB. I think its time for more of the cameras to speak Firewire, but it may not happen, out side of high end press photography digital cameras.
