In Sequoia, I didn't have a problem. With Tahoe, the iPod Classic reboots and then says "ok to disconnect" whenever connecting to my MBP M4. This computer worked fine in Sequoia. I have it connected from usb-c to firewire 800, to firewire 400 to the iPod. Any help appreciated.

It seems Tahoe dropped support for FireWire altogether.

I wonder if I could run a vm of sequoia, put my music into the vm and sync that way...?
Sadly no. Tahoe dropped FireWire support at the kernel level, meaning the device passthrough to the VM cannot happen. I'd suggest either using old machines like I do, just for iPod syncing. Or if you do not have any other computers, create a partition on your SSD with Sequoia or make a bootable Sequoia external SSD.
