I've got a little problem with my ipod. About 6 months ago I bought a used imac for about 400 dollars. The previous owner had a newer model 10GB Ipod with all the software already installed on this computer.

anyways. Last week my girlfriend ordered an Ipod mini. So she gave me her old 5GB Ipod that had been initialized for a PC, but originally was a Mac Ipod. For some reason my Mac won't mount the ipod. I know it's not a firewall problem, because when I plug it into the mac the Ipod recharges.

I hooked the ipod up to a mac at someone else's house and I reinitialized it putting his collection of songs onto the ipod. So as far as I know the Ipod has already been reinitialized back to mac, it just won't work for my Mac. I've tried holding down Play and Menu, and then holding down Previous and Next when the Apple logo shows up, but to no avail. A little help please?

I have no idea what the problem is. Does this have anything to do with the fact that I'm using an older model 5GB ipod on a computer with the newer model 10GB ipod software installed on it?I don't have the CD with the old 5GB software for mac on it. And neither does my girlfriend (she has the PC software). Is there anywhere that I can download the old software? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're also right that the firmware for the new, touch-wheel iPods won't work for the old, scroll-wheel iPods. Look on Apple's site and find the latest revision of iPod Software that supports the original 5 GB iPod.

(oh, and the software for the iPod mini is separate from the other versions of iPod software for both scrollwheel, touchwheel, and dock connector iPods. You and she may not be able to sync to the same machine...I wouldn't know though.)

I think I did do a factory reset. I brought it to a friends house who has a imac and it worked perfectly. I also brought the ipod to work and tested it on the stores Imac, and it also worked. (both computers have been installed with the Older model Ipod software).

I went to apple.com and I did download the update to the old software. Still didn't work.

For some reason I can't even attempt to restore it to factory settings as my computer does not even acknowledge the Ipod.
So it might be a firewire problem.... but I doubt it.

thanks for the links though. I'll try it as soon as I get home and I'll get back to you.

From what I've read on you last post, it doesn't sound like it's the factory reset issue.

This article explains how to force your iPod to appear on the desktop:

I've had a number of recognition problems myself. If it still doesn't work after you try the method in this article, let us know.

EDIT: I'm curious what OS and iTunes versions you use?

yeah I tried to force it (holding down menu and play until the apple logo pops up, then pressing and holding down the next and previous buttons) but instead of showing "do not disconnect" it shows "OK to disconnect".

Edit: I have OS X and the newest version of Itunes (I think it's 4.2)

well, well, well. After isolation all these issues, there must be something wrong with the Mac you own.

I'm wild-guessing that it would be ...

- Your OS files are broken. And needs reinstall.

- Firewire ports are deffective (which I have experienced with my machine once).
Try connecting to another FW port, and also try other FW device.

- Firewire cable is dead (which I've had once).

Any thoughts?

I think it's Apple's latest Firewire bug they have released.... does your iPod work in USB? Mine does, just not firewire, annoying, as it worked prior to updates...
