The LCD seems to be the most vulnerable part of the iPod. Broken LCDs occur more often than any other problems. Apple should offer a special warranty that covers broken LCDs for an extra price. It's obvious why LCDs aren't covered in the standard warranty because most instances are from accidents. As a buyer, such warranty would make me feel much more comfortable.

What you're asking for isn't a warranty, it's insurance. Semantics aside, have you considered making your purchase with a premium type credit card? Some do offer accidental breakage coverage for purchases.
