I am pondering installing ipod linux on one of my ipods just for fun. It looks pretty cool to try out. Does anyone know of a good website to download it for a 1g mini or a 1g nano. I want to try it out on one of these two before i put it on my main video ipod. Is it safe to put linux on the ipods? Can anyone give me any insight?

If you don't know how to put your iPod into disk mode manually from the iPod itself, don't do it.

i most certainly do know how to put my ipod into disc mode
i transferred two whole librarys with about 15 gigs of music each onto my mac with it.

Just out of interest, how do you do it? It could be useful :)

Edit: Actually, it probably wouldn't be too useful, as any computer without iTunes probably won't be able to read HFS+ anyway. I guess you could format it and start again though, in an emergency.

Hm not sure what that has to do with it.

I used to stay up-to-date with the iPodLinux project because I made an installer for it (also made Linux apps too), and the #1 problem was people would get their iPod stuck in certain situations where the computer wouldn't recognize it by just plugging it in, and so manually putting the iPod into disk mode, connecting to your computer and then reformatting your iPod was the only solution (I did that several times).

This is the article I'm talking about:

But I gave up on the iPodLinux stuff a while ago... too many annoying people/questions on those forums. Too many noob who had no idea what they were doing, so that is why I ask if you know how to put your iPod into disk mode.
