I am just making the switch to apple products and am a very satisfied women 😉

I want to transfer music files from my friend's g2 ipod Nano to my MacBook Pro. The ipod is windows formatted.

Is there any way I can transfer the files I want without deleting the original music off of the ipod or reformatting the ipod to mac?

I will reformat if necessary! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Unfortunately, you can't really do that without reformatting. But what you can do is copy all your non-DRM music using a PC onto a FAT32-formatted external storage device (like a hard disk or jump drive) and copy it all over to the MacBook Pro.
