So I sold my old iPod to my friend who has a month-old Dell desktop. We can't get the iPod to charge over the USB connection. It will transfer, it just doesn't get any power. I thought all USB 2.0 ports were powered. Am I wrong? We have tried every single port on the front and the back. Any advice?

As far as I was aware, although USB 2.0 is powered, it can't power an iPod. That's what I thought, anyway.

Yes it can; I charge mine with that way with my PowerBook. Maybe the ports aren't powered in the Dell... you could try plugging some other powered device and see if it works.

Most iPods need Firewire to charge. Only the newest ones will charge over USB. Check the Apple site for info on which iPods are affected.
Edit: I think only iPod mini and the 4G iPods will charge over USB.
