The consensus among iPod fans seems to be that Zune is the size of a brick and weights like one, too. So obviously Zune would be better at deflecting bullets than an iPod, right?

So if you are planning on going to a war any time soon, you might be better of choosing a Zune than an iPod. :p

I think the insurgent had a Zune which got shot and exploded, thus killing him. :p

He was also wearing armor, but if it hadn't deflected off the iPod, the bullet would have pierced it.

You don't know that for a fact, sorry. The iPod doesn't add much protection from a hand gun, let alone an assault rifle.

Thumbs up for an :apple: product getting such good publicity though :)

I was completely unaware that bulletproof vests don't stop bullets. My take on this story is that the guy was unlucky: the shot broke his iPod, and would have been stopped by the vest either way.

Bulletproof vests have different levels of stopping power. The level of stopping power is affected by the weapon type, bullet load, bullet type, range, etc. All vests will fail at some point.

Above the so called bulletproof vests are solid plate type vests. These can stop a much larger round but are much more heavy, bulky and are not fun to wear as I can tell you from personal experience.

In the case of this soldier, the iPod deflected the bullet from the AK and slowed it down enough to not penetrate the vest.

Lucky individual.

It's always pleasant to hear stories like this where by chance a person life was saved from such a small thing! Although not an apple product, the most interesting one I've heard of was when an alemeda county deputy was in a shoot out and his belt buckle deflected the bullet

I was watching a TLC show a couple of months ago where they tested a new type of vest - Armadillo something or another, I think, I'll have to look. In any case, they tested it against all types of weaponry that penetrated normal armor-plated or other so-called "bullet-proof" vests and it faired exceptionally well. They even put it on a mannequin, laid it on a grenade, and weighed it down and there was no internal vest damage after the explosion.

Pretty wild.

Edit: Dragon Skin

The insurgent was killed and Kevin was hit in the left chest where his iPod was in his jacket pocket. It slowed the bullet down enough that it did not completely penetrate his body armor. Fortunately, Kevin suffered no wound.

The article states that it did indeed slow the bullet down enough so that it didn't penetrate the vest.

This is a really cool story! :)

Any mp3 player could have saved his life. It's just that the iPod is so popular, there's probably around a 75% chance of an iPod being the type of player to do it.

So generally speaking, maybe mp3 players save lives.

Maybe, but not all mp3 players have a metal back. Also some Mp3 players have flash drives in them, which makes the much skinner. The iPod did the saving, not any average Mp3 player.

Doubt a Nano or Shuffle would have safed his life

Pretty neat story. And very good advertising!

Whats the difference between an iPod and an HP iPod? Why does everyone seem to hate them?

There is absolutely no difference at all, save for the tiny little logo on the back.

I got this exact iPod (Yes, it was an HP) for Christmas in 2004. No difference at all.

Well obviously, but if you take a typical Zune or Creative mp3 player, they're going to stop a bullet as well.
