I have carefully examined my two iPods for scratches. One is the iPod photo, the other is a black Nano. The results are:
1. The iPod Photo, about 4 months old, is loaded with scratches on the metal back as well as on the front, display included.
2. The iPod Nano has a few scratches front and back, it is much newer, and I have been careful with it.
Conclusion:
I have not been careful with the iPod Photo because I do not think of it as a thing of beauty like I do the Nano, which is probably why I bought it in the first place. One other observation is that black shows scratches more readily than white. I think I agree with Apple that the Nano is just as resistant to scratching as the other iPods but because of the aesthetic properties of the Nano we are disappointed when they occur.
