My second generation iPod from November 2001 has finally started to die. The case is super hot, it won't boot and keeps spinning up and down again...in a horrible cycle of death. Plugging the fella into firewire doesn't do anything either. And I fresh installed it a few days ago to try and solve the constant spinning. Hopefully a run down of his 60 min battery will solve it. If not, saving I must go...

They don't generally last very long although the older ones were put together better IMO. Nevertheless, try discharging it and maybe try a fresh install of the firmware again. It can't hurt. 🙂
