iPod ipod shuffle - icon appear/disappear on desktop

i just bought a new 2nd gen ipod shuffle. i have it 'disabled disk use' - and the icon doesn't appear on the desktop.
however, everytime its syncing (such as adding/deleting songs from the shuffle) the shuffle icon appears on my desktop and disappear once its done. is this normal? just a little annoying glitch. is it the ipod shuffle problem?

running on macbook leopard.

No, that's perfectly normal and is exactly how the iPod (all iPods) are designed to operate.
