I want to purchase an Ipod touch. Should I wait for the 3rd generation to come out or purchase the 2nd generation now?

I used to be like you, I would call the 3rd generation ipod touch a 2.5 version of the 2nd generation, but hate to break it, just call it 3rd generation, by sept 2010 there will be a 4G.

I suggest wait till Oct 14th-21st

Rumors have it that the apple might release an ipod touch 3G with camera (hardly doubt it....)

but I would wait a week or so....

then buy the 32GB 3G.

For the last time, this is NOT the 3rd generation...

...that said, it doesn't mean that there will be another release anytime soon. Buy it now, you'll get to spend more time enjoying your touch instead of waiting a few weeks for the same thing you could've had weeks earlier.

Sorry, but YES, IT IS the 3G.

Aside from that bit of silliness, I doubt Apple will release one with a camera. It's not going to help them compete with Nintendo's DSi or Sony's PSP. I see uses for it, but not enough to make me want it.

Unless you have a dying need for a camera, then don't bother waiting. You won't have the latest and greatest for long, even if you wait.

You obviously didn't click the links. In Apple's support documents: No mention of iPod touch 3G anywhere, but there's mention of iPod nano 2G/3G/4G/5G. Get over it. This isn't the 3rd generation, but that doesn't mean there is going to be another mid-cycle update.

It is the third generation because it's newer than the second generation touch and has different and upgraded hardware aswell setting it apart. Apple doesn't call it 3g because it would confuse people over the 3g mobile phone networks that use that name.
In your mind will the next iteration of the touch be the 3rd generation then? I'm guessing not.
Don't be so snide.

it is the 3rd generation but it is the Late 2009 version?

What does that mean? the hell should I know but the last time they did this was with the classic

Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006)
September 12,2006

Ipod clasic
September 05, 2007

so the new iPod was still released in september so don't expect a new iPod touch before september

Hi danny.

Well I think both ipods are same. There are added functionalities you get in 3rd generation. So its depend on you what you require.

They do the same thing with the iPod Classic, iMacs, Mac Pros, Macbooks, Macbook Pros and Mac Mini. I've mentioned this in like 3 or 4 threads now. Just because it says "Late 2009" Doesn't mean that it is not the 3rd Generation. All it is is how Apple names things, thats just how it is. Google around its the 3rd Generation. That being said there could be an update early to mid 2010, highly doubt it, but it's not impossible.

They are not going to release a Late 2009 model, to release another Late 2009 model a month or two after. That makes no sense whatsoever. Just imagine how unhappy and outraged all the customers who had just purchased the new touch right after it came out for another one to come out a month or two later.

Also, what I have been using as an example and it seems to fit perfect is that there was an exterior change form the first iphone to the second one, same with the first touch to the second touch. From the second iPhone to the third one there was an interior change, no exterior besides chrome writing on back. Same thing goes for the second to third touch, only interior changes.

Nonetheless, I doubt we will see a new touch until September 2010, which should be a complete new body style, hopefully, but I still have my doubts on a camera, if its going to come, I think it will be in 2011. My reasoning is because people are going to want a still camera, not just the video like the nano, and the touch is too small to be able to support a still camera, so until they can make the sensors smaller, which I'll give them just under 2 years, we will probably see a camera then... Just what I'm thinking.

I have to agree.

pple doesn't call it 3g because it would confuse people over the 3g mobile phone networks that use that name.

Except Apple NEVER refers to the generation in the device's formal name. Every iPod nano has been called "iPod nano". When they need to be distinguished (usually for support purposes) the generation is tacked on at the end.

If it's the 3rd generation, why doesn't Apple refer to it as such? There is no reason they would change their naming scheme for this particular model.
