I don't have the 4th gen, but the iFixit teardown article said unlike previous models that build the speaker inside the case, the 4th gen actually has a speaker on the bottom edge like the iPhone series, that must have made the sound louder for you.
FYI, my 4thgen is about 25% louder than my 3rdgen. And the sound is more defined. Sorry, I don't have a 2ndgen, but I'm sure the speakers are similar between the 2nd and 3rd.

Wow, you would really return an iPod because the internal speaker is a little low? Meanwhile there are people still waiting in a huge line to get fingers on one. 😱

Ditto. I no longer have a 2gen, but if memory serves me correctly, my 4gen is definitely louder. It is definitely louder than my 3gen and the quality is better.
yes, comparing my gf's 2nd gen speaker to my 4g touch, the 4g touch has a better internal speaker. I like how it's definitely pointing out the bottom so you can direct where the sound goes, lol I use it when I shower hahah
Actually, I find the new 4g speaker much clearer and louder than my 2g model. I think having an external speaker opposed to internal makes a bit of a difference.
