I suspect the ipod touch is at the end of its life.

Numerous rumors that a smaller ipad are coming, and there have been zero rumors about any kind of new ipod touch.

They'll probably try to get the smaller ipad into a similar price point as the ipod touch.
there are already numerous threads on this. No one knows when/if the next iPod Touch will come out. It's possible Apple will drop the iPod touch in favor of a smaller version of the iPad.
I doubt we'll see another iPod Touch. As Likethesoup says, we might see a smaller iPad replace the Touch.

I disagree with this line of reasoning - a ~7" iPad's form factor is not a replacement for the pocket size iPod Touch.

I agree with rdy0329 below, that the iPod Touch is Apple's version of the Walkman in it's appeal to school kids and others without enough $$$ for an iPhone data plan - - it's the tunes + the simpler games + the wifi web in a hand sized device.

Killing it off would be too soon. For now, I still know a lot of people using ipod touch for school and fun, its just a poorman's iOS device which they can target for teens and even developing countries. It WAS targeted for gaming but as you can see, its lagging behind already.

Perhaps it's just my wishful thinking, but I believe we're in for a significant upgrade to the iPod Touch this September!

:)

Lots of rumours about smaller iPads, I suspect are because they are new. I think the touch is pretty much in maintenance mode, so whatever it gets will be minor bumps in functionality. I love my touch, it's pretty much perfect as a small, mobile platform for music on the move and video in the gym. But then again, I'm not an iPhone user.

I think something will have to come but one must be careful to not over speculate it.
I think the next device will probably have:
Larger screen - as big or bigger than the iPhone 5 will have.
An A5 processor even if the iPhone 5 gets an A6
Bluetooth 4.0 and WIFI only, there will not be a 3G version.
improved camera - I'm thinking an iSight series camera
I think that's all we can assume.

It's going to need a processor bump at some point in order to stay relevant with the newer games and applications coming out. September sounds about right.

When the next form factor for the iPhone is released, that will pave the way for the iPod touch sharing that form factor perhaps. (Just like the 3GS paved the way for it's current form factor) They might just keep the A4 around until then. The things still sell like hotcakes, might as well profit off of what works.

Agreed. Some games it's not even worth playing on my iPhone 4. iPads and iPhones have gotten alot of attention lately, I hope they show the iPod touch some love in the near future. There are still a large majority of folks who have the iPod touch+cheap tracfone or whatever free with the plan phone who could really use a better iPod touch.

Okay You guys are in quite a debate.
• iPad Mini? No! The chances of this replacing the iPod touch are slim.
• The iPod touch is made to be portable, an iPad mini would be too big to fit in your pocket and to be taken anywhere.
• The iPod touch was made to be an iPhone without being a phone. An iPad min would be an iPad, it's not a good enough idea to replace the iPod touch.
• As long as you are talking about sales figures, I'm sure the the iPod touch is the top selling iPod line making it stupid to get rid of.
• An iPad mini is a ridiculous idea!

Anyone agree?

Maybe Apple is waiting to produce the A5X in more supply to put them in the iPod touch.

There are times when Apple is somewhat predictable. This is not one of those times. Who knows what Apple may do this year. As iOS devices other than the iPod grab all the headlines & generate the highest margins, they command the majority of Apples attention.

Now that Apple has become thoroughly addicted to profit & public attention, the products that bolster those two needs, are the stars of Apples show. Everything else is relegated to a near afterthought.

If the iphone 5 gets a 4" screen, i think that the new 4" ipod touch will be named as ipad nano or something like that. I am a ipod touch user since 2007, it's a pity but i understand the movement, the ipod touch is not an ipod, it's a mini-tablet.

With the galaxy player on the market I think they will continue to upgrade to keep it competitive, the galaxy player is actually selling pretty well Im hoping enough to keep Apple interested in upgrading.

Its when there is no competition in the market when Apple stops upgrading, the classic is a good example of this.

When I got my 1st gen iPod Touch it was to use it as a mini tablet. Times changed and I bought the 3rd gen Touch to use it mainly as an iPod and used my iPad as the tablet. I would buy a mini tablet if it met the criteria of being pocketable, otherwise I don't have a use for it.

say what? that just makes no sense at all. Do you even know what the A5X is? The A5x is for the retina display iPad - ONLY. The power it needs for the 4 graphics cores would drain a Touch battery in an hour.
If there is a next Touch it will get the basic A5

Ya, but if they managed to get 70%+ battery in same size on new ipad, why they can't do it on the new iphones/itouch?. The main battery drain is due the retina screen, so an ipod touch is not comparable on this. Other thing is talking about heat, it will be a portable barbecue :)

Speculation: ipod touch will have same technology as iPhone 4S and iPad 2

Speculation: ipod touch will have same technology as iPhone 4S and iPad 2

The first reason for this statement is that the iPod touch has a very defined task, namely introduce teens to the Maciverse and it is still doing that today: last Saturday I saw a girl buy an 8gb iPod touch.

Even if most of us think that 8gb is too bloody small for all the music, apps and movies and wouldn't been heartbroken if it gets removed from the iPod touch line, it still has a place in the teen community. Remember that it in itself is a "statussymbol", but also all the music, apps and movies it contains.

So our way of reasoning doesn't apply, since most of us here are in the iPhone and iPad demograph.

The second reason is that Apple Inc is still introducing the iPhone 4S in countries, again we are the more priviliged ones that are in the first waive when a new device is launched, but global introduction comes in several waives and probably a month before the iPhone 5 gets launched there will be a place where the 4S gets launched. That's how it works.

The third reason is the production process/return of investment of CPU's and chipsets (and most other stuff): it requires a serious investment to design the hardware and production lines, followed by a breakeven point and everything produced after that is just pure profit.
Unfortunally the most expensive part of such a productionline has to be redesigned when a new generation CPU and chipset gets introduced.

So it would be more profitable to let such a line stay in production as long as possible without investing in too many lines (overproduction and ending up with a stock), which costs can cut deeply into the profit. (extra productionlines, room for stockage and so on).

So what to do to counteract those problems:
1) Let one of the iOS devices get outdated by one technology generation, in this case the device that isn't used much, compaired to the other iOS devices by the users that have more money in the demograph of iOS users: the iPod touch.
2) fased introduction of new technology in new iOS devices (first iPad, than iPhone and followed by iPod).

So now the companies have to invest into less production lines for the CPU since they have to focus on the iPad first, followed by the iPhone and in the end by the iPod.
If they also plan that the release of the first waive of new technology in a new iOS (iPhone 5) falls together with the first waive of old technology in a new iOS device ("iPod touch 4S") they can service the lifecycle of 3 lines iOS devices with only +/-65% production capability.

Expect with the release of the iPhone 5 (A5X processor) to see a new iPod touch (A5 processor).

It is said that there it will be out in September and it will have an A5 chip and a bigger screen

Idea?

I'm fairly surprised that I have not seen anyone say what I'm about to; that is, unless there is something contradicting me that I have not noticed. (In which case, please let me know nicely :) ).

The iPhone alone represents a very large part of Apple. They know this. We know this. For last year's releases, they knew they could not ignore their iPhone and just make a minor cosmetic change. To remedy that, they made fairly basic yet nice changes such as adding a faster processor, a better camera, a fix to the antenna "death grip", etc.

The iPod Touch on the other hand, was not as substantial. They could get away with a small change with little repercussions; which was what they did.

What I'm getting to is what if they stayed away from updating both the iPod Touch and iPhone in revolutionary ways so that they would have a better opportunity to do it THIS year. Maybe they wanted sufficient time to completely change their idevices to draw in a whole new crowd, as well as wow their current customers? We have all heard the critics predict that Apple will start dying within the next few years. Maybe they did all of this to counter that? Could this be the explanation to why they showed little love to the iPod Touch last year? I guess we'll have to wait. ;)

You were doing well until you blew it with that statement. The A5X is nothing more than a branch off the old A5 processor with more graphics cores for the retina iPad3. Nothing more
The new A5 (I'm gonna call it the A5+) has the smaller die size uses less power and will be in the iPad Mini and probably the new Touch if there is one.
We just don't know if the next iPad or Iphone will continue the A5 series or move onto the A6.

I did good considering it was in April that I called it:
"Speculation: ipod touch will have same technology as iPhone 4S and iPad 2

Just replace "A5X processor" with "A6 processor" in my above text, although the new iPod Touch has the A5 processor in 32 nm version while the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have the A5 processor in 45nm version.
The main principle still stands, namely phased introduction of new technology to cut on production costs.
