I was reading the manual at Apple and it says this --
Sync voice memos with iTunes. Connect iPod touch to your computer. Open iTunes on your computer, then select iPod touch. Select Music at the top of the screen (between Apps and Movies), select Sync Music, select “Include voice memos,” then click Apply.
http://help.apple.com/ipod-touch/9/#/iph3d6dc359

This implies that memos have to be synced combined with music. Can memos be synced separately? And/or, can memos be downloaded to a computer without using sync?

I've never used an iPod, total newb. Someone, also a newb, will be using the iPod memo feature frequently.

Edit: while I don't think memos can be separately synced, air drop, etc., in the share menu can be used. She'll be happy with that.

You need to use iTunes for voice memos from the included Apple app that comes with the device, there is no other way, and if your music hasn't changed then it will just sync the memos. It's a silly system.

You can install a different app from the App store which can have a different method for sync, like Dropbox.
