iPod touch ipod touch and itunes

My son gave me his old ipod touch after it not being in use for almost a year. Now I would like to DL some apps from the itune store, but he has forgot his old password and no longer uses the email (we have another high speed provider). How can, can I make a different account with itunes and use this ipod?

There should be an option to create a new account in that sign in box in itunes
