Still the Touch in its current form will always lack a lot of the hardware features that the N800 has.

Which is why this whole question of which is better is so hard to deal with. Where one wins the other looses. Each has trade offs that makes the other look vary attractive.

In the end I believe Apple is in the best position to upgrade their device to be clearly at the top of the heap. Mainly because they could do two rather easy things. One is to add Bluetooth and the other is to switch head phone jacks to the one used in the iphone. This to give the user Analog in and out. Both of these could be done on the current platform without much strain.

Nokia on the other hand has much more that they need to rework on their machine. Mostly internal hardware or the software.

Umm...yes, you're right!!....
Well I had to highlight that because in one paragraph you dismissed the Nokia because you don't have ready access to WiFi. A bit further down the response you describe going with a Touch which is WiFi only. I just find a disconnect here in that a problem with one is acknowledged to be OK with another. The logic escapes me.

Much the same as the above. Your reasoning seems to support Nokia yet you went with the Apple device.
I think it's the simple, elegant, direct interface design that is the hallmark of Apple products (at least most of them...)... but maybe that's because I come from a 'design background' so I'm very sensitive (or just a sucker...) to these things..
Or you are a sucker for marketing.

Don't get me wrong design is very important but so is the missing beef. I do believe that Apple is responding to the missing beef question as they are now referring to the Touch as a tablet. As good as Apples design ability is, they can't gloss over what is not there.

In the context of this thread what that means is that when comparing the two devices you need to look at what is missing on each device and what that means to you. So what is it about the Touch that satisfies your need? I think this is important as it provides a context for others to understand why one machine might be more attractive than another, for you and by correlation them.
In the end, to each his own....as I said before I think the N800 IS a very nice device and of course so is the Touch...just meant that to me they're different animals...so in that sense I'm not sure that I can say that one's better than the other, just different and for somewhat different purposes....

:)

Yep that I understand! But why the Touch for you?

Ok, sue me for making a mistake.... ;)

Seriously, I just dashed off a quick post and didn't take the time to really check over it as carefully as I should have...so, I missed the inconsistency you pointed out regarding need for WiFi...

Although my main point at the end I think is still valid at least for me...

As for why the Touch, perhaps, no really great reasons...just liked it...

Good enough for me. I'm still debating, hopefully in a few months out both companies will have new products to choose from.

Sounds good, Dave...

Meanwhile, saw the N810 for the first time in person this afternoon...looks very nice and I like that the overall size is trimmer than the N800, but with same size display.....maybe I should get one too....

The N810 would have been an excellent upgrade to the 800 if it wasn't for one thing. They made the memory situation very bad on this version. Only 2Gb and ONE (1) small flash slot. If you can live with that it is an OK device otherwise careful consideration is required.

I also don't like sliding keyboards from the durability standpoint but that is another issue. Time will tell if this implementation is rugged.

Thanks for the info, Dave....

As for the memory, if the SD slot takes those SDHC cards then the capacity over time as those cards come down in cost, is probably OK, otherwise if it's regular SD slot....

Haven't had a lot of experience with sliding keyboards, but what I have experienced is OK...

i too spent several months trying to decide which device i liked better. For me the fact that the n800 supports BT dun, skype, and is more like a pda where the touch is more amusic player with a marginal browser. the n800 will blow the touch away with its full power browser, while the touch is really only for light surfing. battery life is comparable, video is better on the touch. os2008 works quite well on the n800.

So like someone else said ... if media and flashy are most important then touch is a better choice. If you want a full browser with dun then n800.

other points n800, speakers are actually pretty handy, its smaller than it looks, there is a big input window so you can use your fingers, not quite as easy or fast to type on as the touch without a bt keyboard, in my opiniin they need to be combined and they would make a sweet product.

i have used some nokia phones, the n800 feels like your using a nicely polished kubuntu release or something. I am quite pleased with the functiinality of the n800, so much so that i dont own the touch anymore .... i do have a new ipod nano that will fill the gap for now. I am excited to see what these will evolve into.

Anyways, if the touch doesnt quite cut it, dont be afraid to try the n800, i know i prefer it. btw i wrote this on my n800 lol

afterthought ... flash cards are easy to change ... for some reason people are really hard on the n800, i like apple stuff as much as the next guy, but the n800 is a really nice peice of kit too! just aimed at slightly different markets, both excellent products.

Have you thought about looking at a Dell Axim? Comes with a CF card slot, an SDHC card slot, BT, WiFi, and the option of a 3.7in screen(standard 3.5in). Not to mention you can hack it to get the latest version of windows mobile, give it the itouch feel to it and it suppose to sound good. Last I saw you can get one for like $235 for the 3.5in model with bt and wifi. Then add a 32gb cf card and the 16gb sd card and you are set.
