There are a few programs in the app store to help you learn Japanese. I'd like to learn to speak, read and write (hiragana) in Japanese. Has anyone here used any of them? If so could you recommend any of them?

I'd definitely recommend [app]Japanese[/app]. It has animations to teach you how to write hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji. It has a dictionary (a little outdated at times though), the different forms of a verb (eat = taberu, don't eat = tabenai, can eat = taburareru, etc). The hyperlinks make finding kanji compounds easy to find, and easy to find out how to write and pronounce.

The [app]Wisdom[/app] English-Japanese dictionary requires you know your hiragana and katakana well, but it really is the most up to date and non-native Japanese speaker friendly dictionary.

[app]Pocket Japanese[/app] will teach you basic Japanese vocabulary, grammar, and usage. It's not bad.

I haven't tried [app]Japanese Phrases & Idioms[/app], but it gets excellent reviews.

I'd say for hiragana iKana is your best bet. I've pretty much reviewed all the Japanese learning iphone apps on my site. Still have about 8 or so backlogged will be adding soon though.

Cheers for the advice, I'll be sure to check out your site. I've been messing around with 'My Japanese Coach'. It's OK for beginners.

I'd definitely update your reviews on the Wisdom and the Japanese apps. Both have come out with amazing updates.

I downloaded Japanese idioms and phrases lastnight. Excellent app for beginners! I wishI had had such an app when I was first starting to learn Japanese.
