I see all the rumors about a new gen of iPhone possibly coming out at the WDC. I am currently thinking about buying an iPod Touch, and basically am going to get one. With a new Gen of the iPhone possibly coming, is it smart to wait a few days until June 9th just to make sure a new iPod touch doesn't come out? I mean, I guess I could always return it if I bought it within 30 days. What are your opinions?

I'm in exactly the same situation as you. I would say just wait, it is only less than 2 weeks until WWDC. If a new one does come out then, then you wont have to go through the hassle of getting it returned.

There will not be an update to the iPod touch (barring software which even then won't be till late June) at WWDC. It is a developers conference, it's all about software development and Pro stuff.

The iPod touch will be updated late this year with the rest of the family in time for the Christmas buying season.

so would it still be a decent time to pick up a 16Gb or 32Gb iPod Touch?

the software update isnt a huge concern for me at this point..i dont care about the payment unless its ridiculously priced.

Amazon has it new, with the software update for 40 bucks off + depending where you live, no tax. Thats 70 bucks less then apple for me. (32 gig).

I'm gonna buy it from there.

My guess, is that the next update of the Touch will be memory only.

Assuming (and that is a risk) Apple continues with two sockets for the Touch and one for the iPhone, then the Touch will have double the capacity of the iPhone.

Gut feeling, is that the iPhone 2 will have 2 sockets and thus the same memory as the Touch in the future.

Do you think Apple could release a new fw which included a memory upgrade. Instead of 2 16 gig flash cards, they put in 4 or something? That is not a new gen, but just an upgrade which could be introduced at WWDC. Also, it would include a price drop if they did imo.

will there be a price drop on the 8 or 16 GB IPT at the wwdc?

Price Drop iPod Touch?

Does anybody know if the 32 Gig iPod Touch will see a price cut within the next month or two?
Thanks. :)

Yeah, I would say that you are all set to buy an iPod Touch today. Go for the refurbed model and save a few bucks!

No point in buying refurbed.
Buy it from Amazon, $0 tax (depending on where you live) and it basically costs the same amount, new.

Yes, there is going to be a 128TB iPod touch with a 5MP camera, flash support, 30" screen and OLED display announced at WWDC.

In all seriousness, I think the only bump the iPod touch will get this year is a $50 price drop and maybe a memory increase, not at WWDC though, most likely September.

Lookin' forward to that 2.0 software though!

I'VE got the answer.

I bought an 8 gig touch an hour ago, so there will be new models, major price drops, and great new software. Soon. You can thank me later.

well...honestly, i think that even though the ipod touch has the 'ipod' in its name, it is no where close to the iPod family, firstly it has more of an iPhone software so its kinda like part of the iPhone family...both the touch and phone recieved firmware updates at the same time, so getting another update with the phone wouldn't be a surprise, i personally feel that an upgrade to the iPod touch will be seen at the WWDC and im not talking about only a software update...in order to make it in line with the iPhone i feel apple would be stupid to forget about the touch. thats my take on the whole thing....i have a 16gb touch that i got frm day 1 so i wouldn't mind a new touch to accompany my new iphone...hehe:D

HAHA that happens to us all at some point :D

Will you be paying for the 2.0 software update?

And when we arrive September what does the iPod touch need? I think maybe just a new battery but what else? A coffee machine built in? Or maybe a jet pack. It's just a iPod, the main objective is to listen to some music and watch some movies. Some folks are asking for the impossible, it's really stupid to see that. Get real guys.

Same boat and I'm going to wait. I know that it's probably not a good indicator but I look at local supply. I'm in North Texas and a bunch of the Wal-marts and other stores are currently out of stock of iPod Touch models. In my past experience that's happened right before new models pop up. On the other hand with all of the iPhone leaks it's hard to believe that nothing has leaked in regards to a new iPod model.

New Touch? or New Phone?

Inquiring minds........ It would seem possible that, if the iPhone is being upped to 3G with possibly more memory, why not the iPod Touch, too. Might we see 64GB? A camera and mic? What's to differentiate the two units? If there is an ATT promo with the iPhone price reduced to below that of the comparable iPod---makes no sense. Seems to me that it would make perfect sense for Apple to manufacture two versions of the same unit----one with cellular capabilities and dual power management and one without. Perhaps someone can dig into this and find out more.

I just dropped a whole lot of coin on a 32GB touch, so WWDC sounds like a good bet

O boy this is taking long to sync! I've been syncing for about 30 minutes and only like 1/9 of my music has synced!

So the iPhone getting 3G means that the iPod then needs 64GB, a camera and mic? The iPhone is their premier product, the iPod touch is just a nice afterthought. It makes sense for the iPhone to be the better product. Subsidies don't really affect the pricing of completely different products. T-Mobile has been subsidizing the iPhone's cost for a few months, yet the iPod still holds its same price point.

1. People with iPhones pay more due to a cellular subscription. Contrary to common thought, a large chunk (with O2, about 50%) of revenue, not profit, get's shipped off to Apple.
2. Just because they both have touch screens doesn't mean that they have to be updated at the same time, nor does it mean that the two products should be competing against themselves.

It's amazing how much technology spoils people! I have the 32GB iPod Touch and it is a truly amazing piece of technology. I have thoroughly enjoyed all that it has to offer to me. Of course, I know that it will be obsolete soon, but that is simply the way of the technoworld today.

Unfortunately, it seems like we consumers are never happy having yesterday's big thing: we must always have the latest and the greatest gizmo (and I put myself in that category, too). For proof, just read all of the threads about the supposedly forthcoming 3G iPhones on WWDC day and you'll see hundreds of current iPhone owners writing about getting the new iPhone!! When do we simply stop and say, "Y'know what, I like what I have and I don't need to replace it every 6 months." Apple is laughing all the way to the bank, that's for sure!! ;)

I'll simply try to be content with some software upgrades for my iPod Touch and accept the fact that soon enough, people will be walking around with the newest iPod Touch that implants a chip into your brain to allow for the iPod to play any song that you can think of ... and all for only $1.29 per thought/song!! :D
